Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Okinoshima (Okinoshima Town, Shimane Prefecture) is the central island of the Oki Islands (commonly known as Dogo) in the Sea of Japan, and is a base for remote island tourism packed with natural scenery and history. Characterized by cliffs and oddly shaped rocks created by volcanic activity and marine erosion, rias-style coves, and crystal clear waters, the island life nurtured by the bounty of the sea, such as fishing and seaweed (kelp and wakame), remains to this day.
Historically, it has long been known as a place of exile, and is home to historical sites from the Heian to Kamakura periods, local culture, and unique traditions. In 2013, it was designated as the Oki Islands UNESCO Global Geopark, and nature experiences such as geotourism, trekking, sea kayaking, and sightseeing boat tours of scenic spots are popular.
Highlights
-
Viewing Candle Island
This small island is famous for its sunset views. When the conditions for low tide and sunset are right, the island's rocks overlap with the setting sun, creating a candle-like effect. Viewing the view is typically done from sightseeing boats or observation spots.
-
Highlights of Oki UNESCO Global Geopark (geosites)
The area is dotted with geological landscapes such as sea cliffs and columnar joints formed by volcanic activity and erosion. You can learn about the formation of the landforms and ecosystems on a guided tour.
-
Traditional Culture and Historical Sites
The island is dotted with spots that give you a sense of its history, such as historical sites related to exile, old shrines and temples, and fishing village streets. Festivals and local performing arts are also worth seeing (please check the dates).
-
Sea Activities
There are plenty of experiences to make the most of the ocean, including sea kayaking, fishing, whale watching (seasonal), and diving (be careful of sea conditions).
-
Trekking and Viewpoints
The views from the seaside promenade and small hills are spectacular, and you can also enjoy bird watching and seasonal flowers.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
There are two main ways to get to Oki Islands: by air or by sea. Once you arrive, you can get around the island by rental car, bicycle, local bus, or taxi (although there are not many buses).
-
Air (recommended)
There are regular flights from Izumo Airport (Izumo) to Oki Airport (takes about 25 minutes, frequency varies depending on the season). From the airport, you can use local buses or taxis to get to the port and tourist spots.
-
Sea route (ferry/high-speed boat)
Ferry routes from the mainland include those connecting Oki Islands with ports such as Matsue (Nanarui Port) and Sakaiminato (Yonago). There are high-speed boats (jetfoils) and large ferries (cars allowed), and travel times and operating days vary, so it is essential to check in advance. You can also travel to other Oki Islands via inter-island routes within the islands.
-
Nearest train station on the mainland
Access points include Matsue (Matsue Station), Izumo (Izumo-shi Station), and Yonago (Yonago Station). Travel from the station to the port by bus or taxi (travel time varies depending on the route and transportation method).
*The timetable and operation of regular services varies greatly depending on the season and weather. Please check the latest information from Oki Kisen, the airport, and your travel agency before departing.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Day trip: Arrival - Stroll around the main observation points and town (if conditions are good, you can see the sunset over Candle Island on the same day) - Day trips tend to be hectic as travel takes time.
- 2 days, 1 night: Standard plan to leisurely visit the main spots on the island (including sightseeing boats and some experiences)
- 2-3 nights: The perfect plan for leisurely island hopping and activities (sea kayaking, fishing, trekking, day trips to neighboring islands, etc.)
Nearby spots
- Other islands in the Oki Islands (Ama Town, Nishinoshima Town, Chiburi Island) — Each island has its own unique landscape and culture. We recommend traveling between them by inter-island ferry for a day trip or overnight stay.
- Matsue (Matsue Castle, Horikawa River Tour) and Izumo (Izumo Taisha Shrine) are easy to combine as sightseeing bases on the mainland.
- Tottori area (Sakaiminato's Mizuki Shigeru Road and Tottori Sand Dunes) - Can be visited if you are heading to Oki via Yonago and Sakaiminato.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
-
Weather and cancellations
Ferries and high-speed boats may be canceled due to seasonal winds or stormy weather on the Sea of Japan. Be especially careful during stormy weather in winter and spring. Plan your trip with plenty of time, or check for alternative means of transportation (air routes).
-
Lack of traffic
The number of buses and regular services on the island is limited, so for sightseeing, you should either rent a car or take a taxi, or check the timetable in advance and plan your itinerary accordingly.
-
Cash and Payment
Many facilities on the island only accept cash or do not accept cards, so it is a good idea to bring plenty of cash with you.
-
Nature Conservation and Manners
Coasts, mountains, and wildlife are delicate. Please follow local rules and etiquette, such as always taking your trash with you, not collecting trash in designated areas, and not making loud noises.
-
Seasonal precautions
In summer, be careful of sunshine, UV rays, heatstroke and sunburn while enjoying sea activities, and be careful of insects (such as ticks). In winter, the wind can be strong and the temperature can feel lower. When playing in the sea, take safety precautions such as wearing a life jacket.
-
Best time to see Candle Island
The best time to visit depends on the tide and sunset conditions, so if you are planning to see the view, please check with the local tourist information center or boat company for the best time.
