Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kaiyodai is a high-altitude observation spot in Nakashibetsu Town, located in the Konsen region of Hokkaido. It is known for its spectacular 360-degree panoramic views of vast pastures and rolling plateaus below. On clear days, you can see the ocean and mountains in the distance, and it is a popular spot for photography enthusiasts and drivers to enjoy sunrises, sunsets, and starry skies. The landscape, woven together by the rolling land and pastures, changes its appearance with each season, offering fascinating views of green in summer, golden yellow in autumn, and a blanket of snow in winter.

Highlights

  • 360-degree panoramic view: From the wide observation space, you can see the undulating Konsen Plateau, as well as the distant sea and mountains.
  • The scenery changes with the seasons: from green meadows to golden autumn leaves and snow-covered winter landscapes, each offers different photo opportunities.
  • Sunrise, sunset, and starry sky photography: The starry sky is particularly beautiful when the light is close to the horizon, in the early morning or evening when the air is clear, and on clear nights.
  • Pastures and grazing scenery: You can sometimes see cows and horses leisurely grazing on the grass, giving you a close-up look at the typical Hokkaido scenery.
  • Comfortable driving spot: There is a parking space in front of the observation deck, making it an easy place to rest.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: There are few train lines in the area, and the nearest train station is practically non-existent. Public transportation is limited, with bus routes being the only option, so it is difficult to access the area by train alone.
  • From the airport: Nakashibetsu Airport (Nakashibetsu Town) is the nearest air gateway. The most common way to get there is by rental car or taxi from the airport or Nakashibetsu city center.
  • Car/Rental Car: This is the most convenient way to get around. The roads are generally well maintained, but there are sections where you will be driving on farm roads and prefectural roads, so please be careful of road conditions in winter.
  • Local buses and sightseeing buses: Operational conditions change depending on the season and the year, so please check the bus timetables for Nakashibetsu Town and the eastern Hokkaido region in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term sightseeing: If you just want to see the view and take photos, it will take about 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Take your time taking photos and strolling around: If you want to take photos of the sunrise, sunset, and starry sky, allow at least 1-2 hours (if staying overnight, be sure to take adequate measures against the cold).
  • If you want to take a break from driving: If you want to take your time and enjoy the surrounding scenery, 1 to 2 hours is the recommended time.

Nearby spots

  • Nakashibetsu Town: There are restaurants, souvenir shops, and accommodations. You can enjoy local dairy products and local cuisine.
  • Nakashibetsu Airport: A regional transportation hub. It is the base for arranging rental cars and getting directions.
  • Konsen Plains and Grasslands: Enjoy the idyllic scenery as you drive.
  • Representative tourist spots in eastern Hokkaido (within driving distance): Lake Mashu, Lake Akan, Shiretoko Peninsula, Notsuke Peninsula, etc. (Please plan accordingly as each destination is quite far apart.)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Transportation: Public transportation is limited, so we recommend renting or driving your own car. In winter, winter tires and chains are essential.
  • Weather changes: Fog and sudden weather changes are common in eastern Hokkaido, which can obscure visibility. There are also many windy days, so please dress appropriately.
  • Crowds: Parking lots can get crowded during peak seasons (summer weekends, autumn foliage season, long weekends, etc.). Arrive early for popular morning and evening times.
  • Manners: Please observe local etiquette, such as not entering pastures or private property without permission, not getting too close to grazing animals, and always taking your trash with you.
  • Facilities: Facilities such as shops, restaurants, and toilets may be limited, so be sure to prepare drinks, cold weather gear, insect repellent, and other necessities in advance.
