Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mount Nokogiri is a mountain located in Kyonan Town, Awa District, Chiba Prefecture, with an elevation of around 329m. As its name suggests, it is characterized by rock surfaces resembling the teeth of a saw. It has been used as a quarry since ancient times, and the carved cliffs and quarry marks create a unique landscape. Within the mountain is Nihon-ji Temple, which is said to have been established during the Nara period, and many stone Buddha statues and megalithic carvings remain, coupled with quarrying from the Edo and Meiji periods.

Highlights include the "Look into Hell," a bold view from the edge of the cliff, the gigantic "Hyakushaku Kannon" carved into the rock face, and the "Great Buddha of Nihon-ji Temple (stone Buddha, approximately 30m tall)." The view across Tokyo Bay and Mount Fuji on clear days are also attractive. This is a tourist spot where you can enjoy hiking, photography, and historical exploration all at once.

Highlights

  • Peek into Hell: A thrilling observation spot where you can look down from the tip of a sharply protruding rock, offering a panoramic view of the sheer cliffs and the distant sea below.
  • Hyakushaku Kannon: A huge Kannon statue (approximately several dozen meters tall) carved directly into the rock face. It's an impressive sight to look up at up close.
  • Nihonji Temple Great Buddha (stone Buddha): A large stone Buddha at Nihon-ji Temple. You can enjoy the atmosphere of an ancient temple and the stone Buddha statues.
  • Rock face and quarry remainsThe cliffs, carved out by quarrying, are a unique blend of natural and man-made beauty, making them a popular photo spot.
  • View from the observation deck: You can see Tokyo Bay, Cape Futtsu, and on a clear day, Mount Fuji in the distance.
  • hiking trailsThere are various routes to climb the mountain, including those that do not use the ropeway and traverse routes from the summit, so you can choose one that suits your physical condition.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Walking/Ropeway
    • Nearest station: Hamakanaya Station on the JR Uchibo Line - it's about a 3-10 minute walk from the station to the Nokogiriyama Ropeway base station or the trailhead (this may vary depending on the route).
    • Ropeway: Runs from Hamakanaya Station at the base of the mountain to near the summit. Convenient for those who want to save energy and time.
  • car
    • Access from Kanaya IC on the Tateyama Expressway. Parking is available (paid/free depending on location). Early departure is recommended as it gets crowded during the tourist season.
  • If you use the ferry
    • Take the Tokyo Bay Ferry, which connects Keikyu Kurihama (Kanagawa side) and Kanaya (Chiba side), to Kanaya Port. After arriving on the ferry, you can walk to the foot of the ropeway. This is a recommended way to enhance your trip by sea.
  • Local bus: Tourist buses and local buses may operate from nearby stations and ports. Please check the operating times before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Ropeway ride + sightseeing of major attractions: Approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours (including viewing Hell, Hyakushaku Kannon, and Nihon-ji Temple Great Buddha)
  • Hiking (round trip on the mountain trail) + leisurely breaks: 3-5 hours (depending on the trail and your stamina)
  • If you plan to visit other spots and eat in the area: Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots

  • Kanaya Port (Tokyo Bay Ferry departure and arrival): A base for ferry users. There are seaside walks and a seafood shop.
  • Hota Fishing Port/Banya: A restaurant where you can enjoy fresh seafood dishes (popular restaurants may have long lines so make sure you allow plenty of time).
  • Boso Peninsula coastline and driving courses (Boso Flower Line, etc.): There are many scenic spots and flower spots along the coast.
  • Nearby hot springs and accommodations:You can take a day trip to the baths or stay overnight to relax.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: It gets very crowded on weekends, public holidays, during the spring sightseeing season, and during the autumn foliage season. Since there will be waiting times for parking and the ropeway, it is best to visit early in the morning or on a weekday.
  • Safety/Clothing:There are many rocky areas and steep stairs, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (trekking shoes or sneakers). Please be careful as the trail can be slippery after rain.
  • Precautions for cliffs and observation points: The Hell Peek is dangerous on windy days due to its high altitude. There are also areas without fences, so please keep an eye on small children.
  • Manners: Please be quiet in the temple area, take your trash home or dispose of it in the designated area, and follow the signs and instructions when touching sculptures or stone Buddhas.
  • Seasonal precautions:
    • Summer: Don't forget to take precautions against heat, humidity, and insects (repellent, hat, and staying hydrated).
    • Winter: Windy and cold days can occur, so dress warmly. On clear days, visibility is good and you may be able to see Mt. Fuji.
    • In rainy or windy weather: Avoid excessive climbing as the view and safety on the rocks will be compromised.
  • Check opening hours and facility information in advance: Please check the official information before visiting as the ropeway and facility opening hours, closing days, availability of parking, and fees may change.

Mt. Nokogiri is a spot where you can easily enjoy nature, history, and dynamic scenery. Please be mindful of safety and plan your visit according to the season and crowds. Have a nice trip!
