Zenigata Sand Art (Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Zenigata Sunae is a gigantic sand painting located in Kotohiki Park in Kannonji City, Kagawa Prefecture, modeled after the Kan'ei Tsūhō coin (an old coin shaped like an oval), which is said to have been painted during the Edo period. The sand from the beach was skillfully smoothed and the painting was made on a very large scale in both diameter and width. When viewed from above, it resembles a single coin, and is popular as a lucky charm that symbolizes "never having to worry about money for the rest of your life."
Its distinctive features include its excellent location with the sea and mountains as a backdrop, the dynamic beauty of its shape seen from a distance (from the observation deck), and the way the light changes with the seasons and time of day. It is being preserved and maintained locally as a tourist attraction, and tourists can often be seen taking photos from the observation deck.
Highlights
- Bird's-eye view from the observation deck: From the observation point on Mt. Kotohiki (Zenigata Observatory), you can see the entire sand painting at a glance. On sunny days, the contrast between the Seto Inland Sea and the sand painting is beautiful, making it a popular photo spot.
- Daytime and evening light: The images are clear in the morning, and in the evening the colors of the setting sun make the patterns stand out. The color of the sand changes depending on the tide and light, so it's recommended to visit at different times of the day.
- Reasons to see it as a lucky charm: Locals say that it will bring you good fortune in your financial future, and many people visit to take commemorative photos or pray.
- Surrounding natural scenery: There are walking paths and coastlines around the observation deck, so you can take a walk and feel the sea breeze and the sound of the waves.
