Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Suzumushi-dera (official name: Kegon-ji Temple) is a tourist temple located in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City, and is known for the chirping of bell crickets, as the temple's name suggests. The temple is managed so that the chirping of bell crickets, a symbol of autumn, can be enjoyed throughout the year, and is popular for its unique atmosphere and the friendly sermons given by the head priest. Visitors are given a "straw sandal" (amulet of happiness), and it is said that if they make a wish, Kannon will come and grant it.

Highlights

  • The sounds of bell crickets: The bell crickets kept within the temple are tuned to sing in any season, and you can hear their chirping up close in the quiet main hall.
  • Priest's Sermon: The 20-30 minute sermon (story) is held in the tatami-floored main hall and is a famous sermon mixed with humor. He gives visitors easy-to-understand advice on auspicious events and daily life.
  • Straw Sandals of Happiness: Small straw sandals (Happiness Straw Sandals) are awarded when you make a wish and are popular as good luck charms. The straw sandals are said to mean that "Kannon will come to you wherever you go."
  • Atmosphere of the garden and grounds: There is a small garden and approach to the temple that has been well-maintained, allowing you to enjoy seasonal scenery (cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, autumn leaves, etc.).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station (approximate): Walk or take a taxi from Matsuo-Taisha Station on the Hankyu Arashiyama Line or Arashiyama Station on the Randen (Keifuku Electric Railway) (approximately a 15-25 minute walk from the station).
  • Bus: Another common way to get there is to take the Kyoto City Bus or Hankyu Bus to Arashiyama or Matsuo, then walk from the nearest bus stop.
  • By car: The surrounding roads are narrow and there is limited parking available for the temple, so we recommend using public transportation. If you are going by car, please check the parking information in advance.
  • Note: Access methods and travel times vary greatly depending on the departure point. Please check the official transport information for the latest routes and timetables.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour: 30 minutes (only includes the sound of bell crickets and photography in the main hall)
  • Typical stay: Approximately 1 hour (listen to the priest's sermon, see the temple grounds, and receive straw sandals)
  • A leisurely visit: 1.5 to 2 hours (including a stroll around the area and a break at the teahouse)

Nearby spots

  • Arashiyama area (Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryuji Temple, Bamboo Forest Path): This area is home to many tourist attractions, making it convenient to visit in addition to Suzumushi Temple.
  • Matsuo Taisha Shrine: An ancient shrine known as the shrine of the god of sake brewing, the historic grounds are a must-see.
  • Saihoji Temple (Moss Temple): Famous for its charming moss garden (please note that viewing requires prior reservations).
  • Ryoanji Temple, Kinkakuji Temple, and more: You can also visit famous places scattered around Nishikyo Ward and Kita Ward.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets especially crowded on weekends, during the autumn tourist season, and during Golden Week. You may have to line up to hear the head priest's sermon, so please allow yourself plenty of time.
  • Photography and recording: Photography and recording may be restricted inside the main hall. Please follow the posted notices and instructions of the staff and observe proper etiquette.
  • Consideration for bell crickets: Bell crickets are living creatures. Do not touch or take them home, and do not startle them with loud noises or vibrations.
  • Clothing and shoes: The main hall has tatami mats, so you will need to take your shoes off. Sandals or shoes that are easy to put on and take off are recommended.
  • Admission fee and opening hours: Admission fee, opening hours, and closing days may change. Please be sure to check the temple's official website or local information for the latest information.
  • Surrounding area: Please be careful when visiting by car as the roads are narrow in places and parking spaces are limited. Also, there are residential areas and approach roads in the surrounding area, so please avoid noise and leaving trash behind.

(Note) Facility operating hours, admission fees, and access information are subject to change. Please check the official website or local information for the latest information before visiting.
