Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Notsuke Peninsula is a long, narrow sandbar stretching across Betsukai Town, Notsuke District, in eastern Hokkaido, and is one of the longest coastal formations in Japan. Formed over many years by the accumulation of sand and gravel, it has a unique topography that separates Notsuke Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The peninsula is home to a diverse natural environment, including standing dead fir forests (commonly known as "Todowara" or "Narawara"), grasslands, tidal flats, and seaweed beds (eelgrass beds), making it a valuable habitat and stopover point for migratory birds and waterfowl.

Its greatest attractions are the dynamic seascape that envelops visitors, the extraordinary feeling of walking along the narrow path that juts out into the sea, and the observation of plants and wild birds that change appearance with the seasons. There are many ways to enjoy the area, including on foot, by bicycle, by car, or by taking in the view from the observation deck.

Highlights

  • Todowara Narawara: A forest of dead fir and oak trees remaining in the sea. The trees, bleached by wind, snow, and salt damage, create a fantastical landscape (there is a walking path and observation deck).
  • Tidal flats and eelgrass beds of Notsuke Bay: A shallow water area that supports a high level of biodiversity. It is a great spot for bird watching, attracting migratory birds and waterfowl.
  • Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center (surrounding information facility): You can get explanations of the terrain and ecosystem, information on seasonal highlights, and walking route directions (we recommend checking opening times in advance).
  • Walking paths and observation decks: There are walking trails that take you to the center and tip of the peninsula, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the ocean and wetlands. It is also a beautiful spot for sunrise and sunset views.
  • Wildlife viewing: You can often see Ezo deer nearby, and depending on the season, you can also observe a variety of waterfowl and birds of prey.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Public transportation around Notsuke Peninsula is limited, so it is most convenient to visit by car. Below are general access directions.

  • car:Access is via national and local roads from Nakashibetsu (Nakashibetsu Airport/Nemuro area), central Betsukai, and the Nemuro area. There is a parking lot and information center (nature center) near the entrance to the peninsula.
  • Air + Car Rental:It is convenient to travel by rental car using airports in eastern Hokkaido (Nakashibetsu Airport, Memanbetsu Airport, Kushiro Airport, etc.).
  • Public transportation:Local buses and tourist buses may operate seasonally, but please check in advance as they are infrequent. Round-trip travel by public transportation alone may take a long time.
  • Tour use:There are also guided tours for bird watching and nature guides available, so it's a good idea to consider them if you're a beginner or want to get around efficiently in a short amount of time.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: If you just want to see the scenery around the observation deck and parking lot, it will take about 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Strolling is the main focus: If you want to take a leisurely stroll around Todowara and the promenade, it will take 2-3 hours (including round trip and photography).
  • Bird watching and photography: Half a day to a full day (longer stays are recommended as the bird population changes between morning and evening).

Nearby spots

  • Betsukai Town Center: You can enjoy meals, accommodation, and local cuisine (dairy products and seafood) within the town.
  • Things to do near Notsuke Bay: There are many observation points of the bay and seafood direct sales stores.
  • Nemuro and Cape Nosappu: A tourist hub in eastern Hokkaido. If you travel to Nemuro City or Cape Nosappu, you can enjoy the local history and scenery.
  • Akan and Kushiro area: We recommend combining your stay with nature spots in eastern Hokkaido, such as the marshes, Kushiro Marsh National Park, and Lake Akan.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Protect nature and watch your step:Wetlands and sandbars are fragile ecosystems, so it is important to stay on the boardwalks and designated paths and avoid touching the plants and animals.
  • Do not approach wild animals:Do not feed or get too close to wild animals such as Hokkaido deer. It is dangerous if you startle them.
  • Insect control:In the summer, there may be a lot of mosquitoes, midges, and flies, so please wear long sleeves, insect repellent, and a hat.
  • Weather/Clothing:Due to the strong sea breeze and sudden changes in weather, it is a good idea to bring a windproof jacket and rain gear. We also recommend shoes suitable for muddy and sandy areas.
  • Transportation and Facilities:Public transportation is infrequent, so please check timetables and opening hours (such as at nature centers) in advance. Some sections may be closed or impassable during winter or bad weather.
  • congestion:The peak tourist season (summer holidays and weekends during the autumn foliage season) and the season for migratory birds are the peak times, but overall it is a quiet place. Please be considerate and enjoy nature in peace and quiet.
