overview

Nachi Falls is one of Japan's most famous waterfalls, with a drop of 133 meters, and is a scenic spot that has been an object of worship since ancient times. Its combination with Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine and Seiganto-ji Temple makes it an attractive place for pilgrims.

Highlights

  • A view of the waterfall beyond the three-story pagoda of Seiganto-ji Temple
  • The atmosphere and sound of the water as you walk along the approach to the waterfall
  • A combination of a stroll along the Kumano Kodo and a tour of historical sites

access

The nearest station is Kii-Katsuura Station, which is about a 20-30 minute bus ride from the station, or a 2-3 hour car ride from the Hanwa Expressway (towards Osaka).

Estimated stay

A stroll around the waterfall and visiting the shrines and temples will take 1-2 hours, but if you include the Kumano Kodo trail, it will take half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine (Nachikatsuura Town)
  • Seiganto-ji Temple (Nachikatsuura Town)
  • Kumano Kodo (Nachi Taisha Shrine Pilgrimage Route)

Points to note

The approach to the shrine has many stone steps and wet areas that can be slippery, so please be careful with your footwear. As it is also a place of worship, please act quietly and be careful of falling rocks and rising water in bad weather.
