Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Adachi Museum of Art (Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture) is an art museum where you can enjoy an art collection centered on modern Japanese paintings, as well as a Japanese garden that changes with the seasons. Since its founding, the museum has upheld the philosophy of "harmony between gardens and art," and a major feature of the museum is that the garden is positioned as an important part of the exhibition space. The garden is a strolling Japanese garden that makes use of "borrowed scenery" and clever composition, and has received high praise, ranking highly in garden rankings both in Japan and abroad. The design of the exhibition rooms, which allow you to view the garden from inside the museum as if it were a picture frame, and the carefully selected collection of Japanese paintings on display are attractive features.

Highlights

  • Japanese Garden: A landscape incorporating elements of a pond-centered garden and dry landscape gardens. The garden changes with the seasons, and the composition seen through the window is like a "living painting."
  • Japanese Painting Collection: Japanese paintings from the modern to contemporary era (masterpieces and important works by Japanese painters) are on display, allowing visitors to enjoy the contrast and resonance with the garden.
  • View from the exhibition room: The windows in the exhibition room are intentionally designed to frame the garden, allowing visitors to view the artwork and the garden at the same time.
  • Tea room and rest area: A space where you can relax while looking out at the garden, and you can purchase catalogs and crafts at the museum shop.
  • Seasonal highlights: You can enjoy beautiful scenery in any season, such as the fresh greenery and azaleas of spring, the deep green of early summer, the autumn leaves, and the snowy scenery of winter.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Yasugi Station on the JR Sanin Main Line
  • From Yasugi Station: Approximately 10 minutes by taxi. There are also local buses and shuttle buses that run directly to the museum (please check the official website or the station in advance for schedules and operating status).
  • Access by car: Use the San'in Expressway or other public roads. There is a parking lot at the museum (paid/free depending on the season).
  • From surrounding major cities: The location makes it easy to visit on a day trip from tourist destinations such as Matsue and Izumo, and it is easy to incorporate into your sightseeing route.
  • Please note: Public transport and shuttle bus services vary depending on the season and events, so please check official information before travelling.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Normal viewing time: 1.5 to 2 hours (if you take your time to look around the gardens and permanent exhibition)
  • If you want to take your time to look around, take photos, and take breaks inside the museum, it will take 2-3 hours.
  • If you want to see just the garden in a short space of time: 30 to 60 minutes (however, we recommend viewing the exhibits inside the museum as well)

Nearby spots

  • Yasugi Townscape and Yasugi Festival (Eel Scavenging): There are performance facilities and related spots for the local performing arts that represent Yasugi.
  • Matsue (Matsue Castle, Lake Shinji area): A tourist area accessible by car or public transport. It can be combined with a visit to the Adachi Museum of Art.
  • Izumo Taisha Shrine (Izumo City): A major tourist attraction in the prefecture, it is common to combine it with the Adachi Museum of Art.
  • Local hot spring resorts: Enjoy the gardens and sightseeing with accommodation plans that utilize hot springs in the San'in region.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The gardens are crowded during the cherry blossom, fresh greenery, and autumn foliage seasons, Golden Week and other consecutive holidays, and during group tour times. Since it can be difficult to get the best spot in the gardens during busy times, we recommend visiting on a weekday or right after opening.
  • Manners inside the museum: Photography is prohibited in many areas of the exhibition room (please follow the signs inside the museum). Loud voices, running, and touching exhibits are strictly prohibited.
  • Garden precautions: The plants and rockwork in the garden are very delicate. Please do not enter restricted areas and follow the signs and paths.
  • Clothing and shoes: We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes in the garden. Please be careful when it rains as some areas can be slippery.
  • Seasonal precautions: The autumn leaves and winter snowscapes are beautiful, but be careful of temperature differences and frozen roads. In summer, the sun is strong, so be sure to wear a hat and stay hydrated.
  • Check the latest information: Opening hours, closing days, admission fees, shuttle bus operation, etc. may be subject to change. Please check the latest information on the official website or by phone before visiting.

The Adachi Museum of Art is a place where you can enjoy a unique appreciation experience where gardens and art come together. Take your time to appreciate the harmony between the gardens, which change appearance with the seasons, and the carefully selected Japanese paintings.
