Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Toshima City Tokiwa-so Manga Museum is a ward museum established to pass on to future generations the spirit and history of Tokiwa-so, a symbolic place that speaks to postwar manga culture. The museum introduces the cultural significance of Tokiwa-so, where young manga artists lived together and honed their skills in friendly competition in the 1950s, and retraces their footsteps through exhibits that recreate scenes of life at the time, as well as reproductions of manuscripts, photographs, and other materials.

Its distinctive features include a full-scale reproduction of the rooms, an information corner about the artists associated with Tokiwa-so, and hands-on workshops and special exhibitions that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. The museum also puts effort into activities that involve the entire town, such as town walks and stamp rallies in collaboration with the local community, making it an attractive spot not only for manga fans but also for tourists interested in history and culture.

Highlights

  • A full-scale reproduction of a Tokiwa-so room: Experience what life was like at the time with a reproduction of the actual layout and everyday items.
  • Display of reproduction manuscripts and materials: The process of manga production and relationships will be introduced using available reproduction manuscripts, photographs, letters, and other materials.
  • Annual special exhibitions: Special exhibitions focusing on individual artists or themes. The exhibition content changes depending on the exhibition, so you can discover something new no matter how many times you visit.
