Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Saitobaru Kofun Cluster is a group of ancient tombs spread across Saito City, Miyazaki Prefecture. It's one of Japan's most prominent landscapes of ancient tombs, with a variety of large and small burial mounds built during the Kofun period (3rd to 7th centuries) lined up in a single area. There are approximately 300 tombs (although the number is generally thought to be 311), including keyhole-shaped and circular tombs scattered across a wide plateau. Designated a national historic site, the area is not only attractive for its archaeological value, but also for its springtime scenery of cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers, as well as beautiful morning and evening views. The surrounding area also has facilities for exhibiting archaeological materials, where visitors can learn about the lifestyles and society of the time through excavated items and explanations of excavations.

Highlights

  • Bird's-eye view of the group of ancient tombs: The unique scenery created by the numerous tombs scattered across the plateau makes for a great photo. We recommend taking in the whole view from the observation deck or walking trail.
  • Cherry blossom and rapeseed flower scenery (spring): In spring, rows of cherry blossom trees and a yellow carpet of rapeseed flowers decorate the burial mound, creating a spectacular sight. The cherry blossom viewing season is especially popular.
  • Saitobaru Archaeological Museum and other museums: Learn about the culture and funeral customs of the Kofun period through excavated artifacts and restored materials (there are seasonal special exhibitions and explanations).
  • Walking routes and viewing spots: There are walking paths that connect the burial mounds, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely stroll around the historic site. The silhouettes of the burial mounds are particularly beautiful in the evening.
  • Events and festivals: Local events and illuminations are sometimes held, especially during the spring cherry blossom viewing season (varies by year).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • By car (recommended): Approximately 30-50 minutes from central Miyazaki via national and prefectural roads (depending on traffic conditions). Parking is available, so it's convenient to bring your own car or a rental car.
  • From the airport: Approximately 40-60 minutes by car from Miyazaki Airport. Rental cars and taxis are the most common options.
  • Public transportation: The most common route is to take a local bus or express bus to the center of Nishitoshima city, then take a taxi or local bus from there. Routes and frequency of services vary depending on the season and day of the week, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.
  • Taxis and sightseeing buses: If you are traveling in a large group or want to travel efficiently, it is convenient to use a sightseeing bus or taxi.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Quick view: 30 minutes to 1 hour (observation deck only)
  • Walking around the burial mounds and taking photos: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • A leisurely tour including museum visits: 2-3 hours
  • If you include spring cherry blossom viewing, a leisurely stroll, and sightseeing in the surrounding area, it will take half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Saitobaru Archaeological Museum: You can gain a deeper understanding of the burial mounds through excavated items and explanatory exhibits (located on the premises or nearby).
  • Restaurants and souvenir shops in the center of Nishitoshima City: There are stores selling local cuisine and local specialties.
  • Combining with major tourist spots in Miyazaki Prefecture: Combining with Aoshima and Phoenix Natural Zoo in Miyazaki City, or even going further afield to Takachiho, will expand your sightseeing route.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Manners at Historic Sites: Kofun are historical sites and burial grounds. It is strictly forbidden to enter the burial mounds, dig the soil, or move stones. Please follow all signs and no-trespassing signs.
  • Crowds: The park is particularly crowded during the cherry blossom and rapeseed flower season in spring, as well as on weekends and public holidays. Parking lots may fill up and traffic jams may occur on surrounding roads, so please allow yourself plenty of time.
  • Clothing and equipment: The walking trail is uneven in places. Please bring comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and sun protection (a hat and water). In winter, the wind can be strong and cold.
  • Pets: In some cases, pets are allowed, but please be sure to keep them on a leash and take their waste home with you to protect other visitors and the historical sites. Please check the rules for each facility.
  • Facility opening hours and event information: The museum's opening hours, events, and illuminations change depending on the season and year, so please check the official website or Saito City Tourist Information in advance.

Note: If you are visiting for the first time, we recommend checking out the overview at the museum, and then taking the route around the observation deck and the main walking trails, which is easy to follow. The burial mounds change appearance with each season, so no matter how many times you visit, you will always find something new.
