Lake Sai (Fujikawaguchiko Town, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Lake Saiko, one of the Fuji Five Lakes, is located at the northwestern foot of Mount Fuji in Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture. The lake was created by ancient volcanic activity and lava flows, and the lakeside is charming for its quiet environment, with much of the natural beauty remaining untouched. The surrounding area is dotted with attractions such as the Aokigahara Jukai forest, lava caves (including ice caves and bat caves), and Lake Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba, a restored traditional thatched roof house.
Lake Saiko is characterized by its relatively quiet and tranquil atmosphere among the Fuji Five Lakes, making it an ideal place for nature experiences such as fishing, camping, cycling, and hiking. On clear days, Mount Fuji can be seen across the lake, and the scenery, illuminated by morning mist and sunsets, is popular with photography enthusiasts.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- congestion: Parking lots and roads in the area can become congested during seasons when Mount Fuji is easily visible (clear days from autumn to winter, cherry blossom viewing season in spring, Golden Week, and summer vacation), as well as on weekends. Please allow plenty of time for your trip.
- Manners: As the area is largely a nature conservation area, please take your trash with you and use of fires is prohibited or restricted except in designated areas. Please follow the rules when using the campsite.
- safety: It is easy to get lost around Aokigahara Jukai, so avoid going off-trail and use a map or guide. The caves are dark and slippery, so bring a headlamp and comfortable shoes.
- Weather/Clothing: The lakeside is windy and can easily get cold. Please bring warm clothing, especially from autumn to spring. Even in summer, it can get chilly at night.
- natural environment: There are many insects (especially in the summer), so please bring insect repellent when hiking. In the winter, roads may freeze or snow may accumulate, and transportation and facilities may shorten their hours or close.
- Tourist facility opening hours: Opening hours vary depending on the facility and season, so please check the official website before visiting.
Lake Saiko is a relaxing tourist spot where you can enjoy the tranquil nature and the view of Mt. Fuji. Please plan your stay according to your purpose (strolling, experiences, activities, photography), and be mindful of safety and etiquette when visiting.
