Zao Okama (Zao Town, Katta District, Miyagi Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Zao Okama is a beautiful crater lake formed at the crater mouth of the Zao mountain range, and is a popular scenic spot also known as Goshiki-numa. The water's surface changes color from moment to moment depending on the weather, sunlight, and the composition of the lake bottom, hence the name "Okama (Five-Colored Lake)." You can enjoy a variety of colors, including emerald green, cobalt blue, and deep green. The lake is characterized by its topography created by ancient volcanic activity and the surrounding rugged volcanic landscape, and the contrast between the beauty of the mountains and the mystical lake surface is a major attraction.

Highlights

  • Panoramic view from the observation deck: You can see directly above Okama from the observation deck and promenade. It is a classic way to enjoy the changing colors of the lake surface from a distance.
  • Color Change: The color of the lake changes depending on the time of day, whether it's sunny or cloudy, so you can see different expressions no matter how many times you visit. The light is perfect in the morning and early morning, making it perfect for photos.
  • The power of the volcanic terrain: You can experience the dynamism of the volcano up close, from the crater walls and the surrounding rugged terrain to the atmosphere of the fumaroles.
  • Alpine plants and seasonal scenery: The alpine plants in early summer and the autumn leaves are spectacular (however, due to the high altitude, the timing of flowering and autumn leaves varies depending on the elevation).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Car (recommended):
    • From Sendai: Approximately 40-60 minutes by car from central Sendai (depending on road and traffic conditions).
    • There are sections of the Zao Echo Line (Zao High Line) that are closed during the winter due to bad weather. The road usually opens between spring and autumn, so please check the traffic information in advance.
    • Parking: There is a tourist parking lot and plaza near the summit, from which you can walk to the observation deck.
  • Public transportation:
    • The nearest train station is Shiroishi-Zao Station on the JR Tohoku Main Line. From the station, there are bus and taxi routes heading towards Zao, but please note that many routes and timetables are seasonal, so please check in advance.
    • During the tourist season, shuttle buses and special buses to Zao may operate from Sendai Station and other stations (seasonal only).
  • Walking/Hiking: The observation deck can be reached by a short walk from the parking area near the summit, but there are also more serious hiking routes in the area.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: Approximately 30 to 60 minutes for a round trip to the observation deck and viewing
  • Leisurely photography and strolling: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, including the surrounding walking trails
  • Day trips combining with nearby hot springs and other attractions: Half a day to a full day (combining with Zao Onsen, Togatta Onsen, etc.)

Nearby spots

  • Zao Onsen (Yamagata side) — A historic hot spring town known for its therapeutic baths. Also close to the ropeway and ski resort.
  • Togatta Onsen (Miyagi side) — A family-friendly hot spring town with plenty of day-use bathing facilities and souvenir shops.
  • Zao Ropeway and Zao Ski Resort - Famous for its winter frost-covered trees (groups of frost-covered trees = "Juhyo").
  • Zao Dairy Center (Milk Land Zao) — A facility where you can enjoy local dairy products and ice cream.
  • Tourist attractions in the Shiroishi/Zao area, such as Shiroishi Castle, are scattered in locations that are easy to reach by car.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Seasonal road closures: Some mountain roads, such as the Zao Echo Line, are closed during the winter, making it impossible to drive to the Okama area for a period of time. Please check road opening information in advance.
  • Sudden weather changes: Due to the high altitude, sudden fog, strong winds, and temperature drops may occur. Please prepare warm clothing and rain gear and pay close attention to weather information.
  • Volcanic gases and safety precautions: As this is a volcanic area, please follow all restricted areas and danger signs. Entering or jumping into the lake is prohibited.
  • Crowds: Parking lots and observation decks can get crowded during peak tourist seasons (especially on sunny weekends and during autumn foliage season). It's best to plan your visit with plenty of time to spare.
  • Manners: Please take your trash with you when you leave the observation deck or on the promenade, and avoid damaging the plants and ground. Flying drones without permission and throwing stones into the lake are also strictly prohibited. Please ensure your surroundings are safe and be considerate of other visitors.
  • High altitude preparation: You may feel more out of breath and unwell than usual, so be sure to take care of your health and remember to stay hydrated.

Zao Okama is a fascinating place with the dynamism of nature and the mysterious colors of the lake surface. Please be sure to check road and weather information and manners before enjoying the scenery safely.
