Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Sugadaira Plateau is a highland resort area located in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 1,200 to 1,400 meters. Skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing are popular in the winter, and in the summer, it serves as a summer resort where you can enjoy outdoor activities such as mountain climbing, trekking, cycling, and grass sports (rugby and soccer training camps). It has long been used as a training camp site for universities and adult teams, and is known as a mecca for high-altitude training, but it is also attractive for its vast grasslands and idyllic scenery.

Highlights

  • Ski and snow resortsThere are several ski resorts scattered throughout the area, offering everything from gentle slopes for families to advanced courses and cross-country skiing. The snow quality varies from heavy inland snow to powder-like snow.
  • Cross-country ski course: The courses take advantage of the undulating plateau terrain and can be enjoyed by beginners to advanced skiers.
  • Highland flowers and sceneryIn summer, you can see highland plants and flower fields (lupines, etc.), and the open grassland scenery spreads out before you. It is also a beautiful spot for viewing the sea of clouds and starry sky in the mornings and evenings.
  • Sports training camp culture: Many rugby and soccer teams come here for training camps, allowing them to experience the atmosphere of high altitude training.
  • Trekking and cycling: Hiking routes and highland roads leading to the surrounding mountains are popular for cycling. There are also walking trails for beginners.

  • Nearest major station: Ueda Station (JR). From Ueda Station, take a bus or car towards Sugadaira.
  • bus: From Ueda Station and various stops on the Ueda Electric Railway, there are bus routes to Sugadaira Kogen, including seasonal ones. The number of buses increases during peak seasons in winter and summer, but there are fewer buses during the off-season, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.
  • car: Approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour from the center of Ueda City via prefectural and national roads (depending on traffic conditions). Chains or studless tires may be required in winter. Parking is available at each ski resort and facility, with some paid and some free.
  • Expressway use: From the nearest interchange, you will need to take local roads. Access routes vary depending on your starting point, so please check the highway directions or your car navigation system.
  • Note: Routes and times are subject to change depending on the season and year. Please check the Ueda City Tourist Information Center, the official transport company website, and the ski resort website for the latest information before visiting.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Seasonal clothing and equipment:Because of the high altitude, there is a large temperature difference, and it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings even in summer. In winter, it can be very cold and snowy, so please prepare warm clothing, skiing equipment, chains, etc.
  • Traffic and Road ConditionsIn winter, icy roads and snow accumulation make driving difficult, so studless tires and chains are necessary. Local buses may be delayed or suspended due to snowstorms, etc.
  • congestionSki resorts, accommodations, and roads will be congested during the New Year, spring and summer holidays, and long weekends. We recommend making reservations for accommodation, lift tickets, and rentals early.
  • Nature Conservation and MannersTo protect the natural environment of the plateau, please be sure to take your trash with you or dispose of it in designated areas, and refrain from using fires anywhere other than designated areas.
  • health aspect: At high altitudes, you may become short of breath and feel fatigued. If you have concerns about your heart or respiratory system, do not push yourself and avoid sudden exercise.
  • Check for the latest informationSnow conditions, business hours, bus schedules, road closures, etc. may change depending on the season. Please check the latest information on the official website or local government information before visiting.
