Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Notojima is the collective name for an island region made up of a number of large and small islands in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, located in the inland bay of the Noto Peninsula. In the past, fishing villages dotted the island, accessible by ferry, but the Notojima Ohashi Bridge (Twin Bridge Noto) now connects the island to the mainland by road, improving access. While the island retains its rich natural surroundings, peaceful fishing village scenery, and strong fishing and seafood culture, it also boasts a wealth of tourist attractions, including the Notojima Aquarium and the Notojima Glass Art Museum, making it an attractive destination for a wide range of visitors, from families to couples and photography enthusiasts.
Highlights
- Notojima Aquarium: One of the largest aquariums in the Hokuriku region. Popular attractions include dolphin and sea lion performances, jellyfish exhibits, and a touch pool. There are also exhibits that recreate the local ocean, making it enjoyable for both children and adults.
- Notojima Glass Art Museum: The museum features exhibitions of glass artists' works, special exhibitions, a shop and cafe. The beauty of the glass sculptures and the scenery seen through the glass are impressive. Experience classes are sometimes held (reservations may be required).
- Driving and cycling coursesThe island has a beautiful coastline, and the views from Notojima Bridge and small observation spots are appealing. We recommend touring the island by car or renting a bicycle.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- trafficPublic transportation on the island is limited, so be sure to check your transportation options in advance, especially on weekends and off-season. Renting a car or using a taxi will help you get around more easily.
- congestion: The aquarium tends to be crowded during the summer swimming season, consecutive holidays (Golden Week and Obon), and peak aquarium seasons. We recommend making reservations early for accommodation and experience classes.
- Climate and clothing:There are windy days at the seaside. The sun is strong in summer, and northwesterly seasonal winds and snow can affect the area in winter, so be sure to take measures to protect yourself from the cold and wind. It's also a good idea to bring rain gear.
- Manners: As this is a fishing area, please avoid entering fishing equipment or fish farms and respect the local lifestyle and nature. Please take any trash you find in the sea or on the beach with you.
- Check facility information: Please check the facility's official website in advance for opening hours, closing days, and whether or not experience programs are being held (these may change depending on the season and events).
