Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The hills of Biei (Biei Town, Hokkaido) are a tourist destination known for their patchwork landscape of farmland and single trees scattered across the gently sloping hills. Originally a rural landscape dominated by dairy farming and field crops, the area began to attract attention as a tourist resource between the 1970s and 1990s, and is now a popular spot for photography enthusiasts and motorists from both Japan and abroad. The area's appeal lies in its dramatic changes in appearance with each season, offering a variety of landscapes to enjoy, from summer flower fields to autumn foliage, winter snow, and spring budding trees. Typical photographic subjects include single trees (single standing trees) such as the "Ken and Mary Tree" and the "Seven Star Tree," as well as expansive views including footpaths and farm roads.

Highlights

  • Patchwork Road/Panorama Road: See the colorful fields from the farm road that winds through the hills. A popular way to tour is by car or bicycle.
  • Ken and Mary's Tree: A single coniferous cherry tree that became famous through a TV commercial. There are observation points nearby.
  • Seven Star Tree: A poplar tree that became famous due to its appearance on a cigarette package.
  • Shikisai no Oka: A tourist flower farm. In the summer, colorful flower fields spread out (there is an entrance fee and a paid zone).
  • Blue Pond (Biei, Shirokane): A famous spot in the neighboring Shirokane area. The water of this pond appears emerald blue, making it a popular photo spot.
  • Observation deck/photo spot: The view from the observation space on top of the hill is a great vantage point.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Furano Line "Biei Station" / Approximately 20-30 minutes by local train from Asahikawa, also connects to Furano.
  • Train + Bus: From Biei Station, take a taxi or a local bus that follows the tourist route (seasonal tourist buses are also available) to major spots.
  • Private car/rental car: Approximately 30-40 minutes from Asahikawa, approximately 2 hours from Sapporo (varies depending on roads and seasons). It is convenient to travel around Patchwork Road and Panorama Road by car.
  • Tours: There are many day trips and photography tours available around Furano and Biei.
  • Parking: There are dedicated parking lots at major spots (Shikisai-no-Oka, Blue Pond, etc.). However, they may fill up during the peak season, so it's best to arrive early in the morning.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Drive around the main hills: 1.5-3 hours (including photo opportunities)
  • A half-day tour (3-5 hours) to explore multiple spots, including Shikisai-no-Oka and the Blue Pond
  • If you plan to combine sightseeing in Furano or Asahikawa (lavender fields, zoo, etc.): 1-2 nights recommended

Nearby spots

  • Blue Pond (Shirogane) / A beautiful emerald blue pond located close to Biei
  • Shirogane Onsen: A hot spring resort where you can relax and unwind with a day trip or overnight stay
  • Furano (Farm Tomita, etc.) / Famous for its lavender and flower fields (approximately 30-40 minutes by car)
  • Asahiyama Zoo (Asahikawa) – Popular with families (easy access from Asahikawa)
  • A viewing spot for the Tokachi mountain range. On a clear day, you can see both the mountains and the hills.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The area gets extremely crowded during the summer months of July and August (lavender season), the autumn foliage season, and long weekends. We recommend visiting popular spots early in the morning or in the evening.
  • Manners: Many of the photo spots are close to farmland or private property, so please do not enter fields or houses, do not damage crops or fences, and do not cause any disruption to agricultural work.
  • Parking: Please use designated parking lots and avoid parking on the street or blocking traffic. There are many narrow areas around curves and farm roads.
  • Drones: Flying drones is subject to local regulations and rules. Please check in advance and take the necessary steps if permission is required.
  • Winter precautions: Road conditions deteriorate due to snow and ice. In winter, you will need chains, studless tires, and knowledge of driving on snowy roads. Opening hours and access to tourist facilities may be restricted.
  • Weather and Lighting: The scenery of the hills changes dramatically depending on the time of day and the weather. If you are looking to take photos, it is best to aim for early morning fog or the golden hour in the evening.

The hills of Biei are a scenic spot where you can enjoy viewing, taking photos, and leisurely strolling. Take your time to enjoy the different faces of the seasons, while being mindful of the weather and manners.
