Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Bihoro Pass is a pass located in Bihoro Town, Abashiri District, Hokkaido, at an elevation of approximately 525m, and is known as a scenic spot offering a panoramic view of Lake Kussharo. From the pass, you can see the expanse of Lake Kussharo below, and on clear days, you can even see the Akan and Mashu mountains and the distant Shiretoko mountain range, making it a popular spot for photographers and drivers. There are observation decks and parking lots along the road, and the scenery changes with the seasons (fresh greenery in spring, deep green in summer, autumn leaves, and snowy winter scenery), making it a popular spot for photographers and drivers.

Highlights

  • A panoramic view of Lake Kussharo: You can see the large depression in the lake and the surrounding mountains. Perfect for photographing the lake surface, morning mist, and evening scenery.
  • Observation decks and viewpoints: There are several observation points on the pass, as well as photo spots and rest areas (some with shops and toilets).
  • Cycling and driving: The mountain pass road with its ups and downs is popular with cyclists, and driving through it offers an exhilarating view.
  • Seasonal changes: Autumn brings a contrast of autumn leaves, while winter brings a magical landscape of snow. The early morning mist and sunsets are also highlights.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: The nearest station on the JR Sekihoku Main Line heading towards Memanbetsu is Bihoro Station. The most common way to get to the pass from the station is by car.
  • Car: Access by car is convenient. It generally takes about 20 to 30 minutes from the center of Bihoro Town (this varies depending on roads and the season). Parking is available (it gets crowded during peak seasons, so it is recommended to arrive early).
  • Bus: Local buses and tourist buses may operate during the tourist season, but please check the timetable in advance as the number of buses is limited.
  • Taxi: You can also get there by taxi from Bihoro Town or nearby hot spring areas (e.g. Kawayu or around Lake Kussharo).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour: If you only want to visit the observation deck, it will take about 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Photography/Walking: If you want to take your time taking photos and walking around the area, you will need 1-2 hours.
  • If you are including cycling or driving: We recommend a half-day to full-day itinerary that includes round trips and sightseeing in the surrounding area.

Nearby spots

  • Lake Kussharo: Enjoy nature experiences such as canoeing and sand baths (hot springs on the lakeshore).
  • Kawayu Onsen: A hot spring resort near Mount Io. Perfect for relaxing in the hot springs.
  • Lake Mashu: A nearby tourist spot. A popular sightseeing route includes a view of Lake Mashu.
  • The area around Kussharo Prince Hotel and the surrounding roads are developed as driving courses.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The observation deck and parking lot are crowded during the summer, autumn foliage season, and long weekends. During busy times, be aware of parking shortages and roadside parking obstructing traffic, and consider visiting early in the morning or in the evening.
  • Weather and visibility: Because it is a mountainous area, visibility is often poor due to fog and low clouds. Whether you can get a clear view depends on the day, so be sure to check the weather forecast for the day.
  • Winter road conditions: In winter, snow and ice accumulate, making the road slippery. If you visit in winter, you will need studless tires, chains, and other appropriate equipment. The road to the observation point may also be closed.
  • Nature and Manners: Please take your trash with you and do not disturb the nature or vegetation. When taking photographs, please be considerate to other visitors.
  • Safety measures: There are some areas of the observation area that do not have fences, so please watch your step and take care to avoid falling. Please keep an eye on small children, especially if you are traveling with them.

Bihoro Pass is easily accessible and offers impressive scenery even for a short trip. Be sure to check the weather and road conditions and enjoy the exhilarating views overlooking Lake Kussharo.
