Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Chikubushima is a small island in the northern part of Lake Biwa, located in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture. It has been an object of worship since ancient times and is known as a sacred site that retains strong traces of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism. The island is home to the Tendai sect's Hogon-ji Temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine, and has long been a popular place of worship and pilgrimage. The island's unique scenery floating on the lake, the shrines and temples that can be reached by climbing stone steps, and the panoramic views overlooking the lake are all major attractions.
