Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Ryujin Grand Suspension Bridge is a pedestrian-only suspension bridge located in Daigo Town, Kuji District, Ibaraki Prefecture. It spans a deep valley (Ryujin Gorge) and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and streams, making it a popular tourist spot where you can enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons. The thrill of the bridge itself, combined with the majestic nature, makes it a famous photo spot. It is also known for hosting bungee jumping events, making it popular with those seeking active tourism.

Highlights

  • View from the bridge: From the bridge, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the valley floor and the changing seasons, such as the greenery, the colorful leaves in autumn, and the snowy scenery in winter.
  • The scale of the suspension bridge: The swaying and open feeling that only a pedestrian-only suspension bridge can provide. You can really get a sense of its height and length (please check the official information guide for the latest figures before visiting).
  • Bungee jumping: Bungee jumping is sometimes available on the bridge and is popular with adrenaline seekers (limited availability, age, weight and health restrictions apply).
  • Photo spots: The most popular spots for taking photos are the observation decks in the middle of the bridge and on both ends. The lighting is good in the early morning and evening, making for dramatic photos.
  • Nearby nature walks: There are walking trails and observation decks near the bridge, where you can enjoy short hikes and walks.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Hitachi-Daigo Station on the JR Suigun Line.
  • Travel from the station: Access by bus or taxi from Hitachi Daigo Station (buses run infrequently, so service times may vary depending on the time of day and season). The approximate travel time by taxi is approximately 20 to 30 minutes (this may vary depending on traffic conditions).
  • Access by car: From the Naka Interchange on the Joban Expressway or via national and prefectural roads from various directions. Parking is available, but it is recommended to arrive early as it can get crowded during events and the autumn foliage season.
  • Important note: If you are using public transport, please check the timetable in advance, as there are often fewer services at night.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Just to see and walk around the bridge: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including time for taking photos and walking slowly).
  • If you choose to walk the surrounding trails: 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
  • If you include experiences such as bungee jumping: Approximately half a day (depending on waiting times and procedures).
  • Day trips combined with sightseeing in the surrounding area (such as Fukuroda Falls): We recommend a half-day to full-day course.

Nearby spots

  • Fukuroda Falls: A famous waterfall that represents Daigo Town. The views from the waterfall viewing platform and the waterfall tunnel are popular.
  • Promenades and observation decks around Ryujinkyo Gorge: Enjoy observing nature and taking photos on the walking paths along the valley.
  • Okukuji Daigo Roadside Station: A rest spot with a wide selection of locally grown agricultural products and souvenirs.
  • Okukuji hot springs and accommodation: We recommend taking a day trip to the hot springs or staying overnight to relax.
  • Local cuisine: Enjoy local dishes such as Okukuji Shamo (local chicken) and soba noodles.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets especially crowded during the autumn foliage season. Parking lots may fill up and roads may become congested, so we recommend visiting on a weekday or early in the morning.
  • Safety and Health: The bridge may sway. Those with a fear of heights, heart conditions, or pregnant women should not attempt this activity. Bungee jumping has age and weight restrictions and health conditions, so be sure to check with the organizer before participating.
  • Manners: Running, jumping, and throwing things on the bridge are prohibited. Please take your trash with you or dispose of it in designated areas to avoid damaging the surrounding scenery. When taking photos, please be considerate and not obstruct other pedestrians.
  • Clothing and equipment: The wind can be strong in the valley, so please bring appropriate winter clothing and comfortable shoes for the season. Be careful as the trail can be slippery in rainy weather.
  • Pets: Whether or not pets are allowed depends on the facility's regulations. Please be sure to keep pets on a leash and follow proper etiquette. Please check in advance.
  • Check the latest information: Opening hours, admission fees, bungee jumping dates, and parking availability may change, so please check the official website or Daigo Town Tourist Information before visiting for the latest information.
