Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tanegashima Space Center (JAXA Tanegashima Space Center) is Japan's leading rocket launch facility, located on Tanegashima Island (Nishinoomote City), Kagoshima Prefecture. Taking advantage of its geographical location facing the sea, the facility is used to launch satellites and test and maintain rockets. The large site is equipped with a launch pad, rocket assembly building, and a visitor center with technology exhibits, and one of its great attractions is being able to experience the cutting edge of space development through public open days and tours.

Its distinctive features include the launch of large rockets such as the H-IIA/H3, the spectacular viewing of the rockets as they are launched into the sea, and the abundance of life-size rocket models and actual rocket parts on display, as well as easy-to-understand explanations with videos and commentary. This facility can be enjoyed not only by space enthusiasts, but also by families and tourists.

Highlights

  • Visitor Center (Exhibition Room): There are rocket models, exhibits explaining the launch mechanism, and a video theater, making the exhibits easy to understand even for first-time visitors.
  • Life-size rocket model and actual rocket exhibit: The exhibits, which allow you to see life-size models of the H-IIA/H3 and other aircraft, as well as engine parts, are popular photo spots.
  • Launch viewing point and observation areaDuring normal viewing, you can only see from a distance, but on launch days, designated viewing areas will be set up, allowing you to experience the excitement of the launch (advance registration and fees may apply).
  • Tours (when held): There are sometimes tours that provide technical explanations and guide tours of specific areas of the premises, and these are often by reservation only.
  • Souvenirs and Museum Shop: There are shops selling rocket-related goods and local products, making it convenient for finding souvenirs.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

There are no trains on Tanegashima, so the main ways to get to Tanegashima from Kagoshima mainland are by plane or ferry.

  • aircraftThere are regular flights from Kagoshima Airport or Kagoshima City to Tanegashima Airport. The flight is short and convenient. From Tanegashima Airport to the Space Center, you can travel by bus or taxi (travel time varies depending on the route and transportation method).
  • ferryFerries and high-speed boats depart from Kagoshima Port (Kagoshima City) to Tanegashima. The boat trip takes several hours, so you'll need to plan ahead. From Tanegashima's ports (Nakanagata, Nishinoomote, etc.), you can take a local bus or taxi to the Space Center.
  • Local transportation: As there are limited bus services on the island, it is convenient to rent a car or take a taxi. If you are planning to watch a launch or other visits that require a specific time, please make sure to reserve your transportation in advance.

*Timetables and operating conditions change depending on the season and time of year, so please check official information from airlines, ferry companies, and JAXA in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Visitor Center Tour: 1-2 hours
  • If participating in a site tour: +1-2 hours (varies depending on the tour content)
  • Viewing the launch (using the on-site viewing area): Half a day to full day (including waiting and travel before and after the launch)
  • Stay including sightseeing on the island: 1-2 nights recommended (if using a ferry, please also consider the round trip itinerary)

Nearby spots

  • Nishinoomote city center: There are restaurants, souvenir shops, and local markets where you can enjoy local seafood and cuisine.
  • Tanegashima Beach: Beautiful beaches and snorkeling spots are scattered throughout the area, allowing you to enjoy nature in between sightseeing.

  • Surrounding remote islands (depending on access): It is also possible to travel to Yakushima and Amami (connections may be required depending on the route or flight).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • The launch day will be crowded: The number of tourists increases dramatically on the launch day and the scheduled launch date. We recommend making reservations for accommodation and transportation early. Viewing areas may require advance applications, lotteries, or fees, so be sure to check official information.
  • Tour rules and photography restrictions: There may be areas where photography is prohibited or items that are prohibited from being brought into the park, both on the premises and while viewing the park. Please follow the instructions of the staff and observe proper etiquette. The use of drones is often prohibited.
  • Weather impacts: Strong winds along the coast, rain, and dense fog can cause launches to be postponed or canceled. Please check the latest launch information and weather conditions before your visit.
  • Allowance for transportation and travel time:Public transportation on the island is infrequent, so plan your travels well in advance, especially at night.
  • Consideration for the natural environment: To protect the beach and natural environment, please take care to take your trash home with you and refrain from using fires except in designated areas.
  • Preparing your belongings: Protection from the sun and sea breeze (hat, sunscreen, jacket), insect repellent, drinks, etc. We recommend preparing these as there may be long wait times to watch the launch.

Finally, be sure to check the official JAXA Tanegashima Space Center website and the latest information from each transportation company for details about the tour (such as tour registration, availability of tours, launch schedule, and transportation information).
