Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Akihabara Electric Town, located in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward, is Japan's leading electronics district and subculture hub. Originating as a postwar black market, it developed into an "electric town" in the 1950s and 1960s as a gathering place for retailers of home appliances and electronic parts. Since the 1990s, it has become a major hub for computers and PC parts, and has since become known both domestically and internationally as a center of "otaku culture" including anime, manga, figurines, doujin, and maid cafes.

Its distinctive feature is its diverse mix of commercial areas, from the latest home appliances to used parts, retro games, anime-related products, cosplay and maid cafes, music and idol culture. You can enjoy shopping and exhibitions during the day, and at night it bustles with neon lights and a large game center, so you can enjoy different faces depending on the time of day and your purpose.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets very crowded on weekends, holidays, and in the evenings. Popular stores and cafes can have long lines, so please allow yourself plenty of time.
  • Photography etiquette: There are some stores and indoor locations where photography is prohibited. Photographing cosplayers or people requires permission from the subject. Large-scale photography and the use of photography equipment on the street may be restricted.
  • Maid cafe rules: There may be restrictions on photography when entering the cafe, and additional fees (such as instant cameras and service charges). If it's your first time, be sure to check the menu and any important points carefully.
  • Eating, drinking and garbage: It is good manners to refrain from eating while walking. Take your garbage home or dispose of it in designated areas.
  • Cash and Payment: Large stores accept cards and electronic payments, but smaller stores and second-hand shops may only accept cash. It's a good idea to have some coins and cash on hand.
  • Smoking and Noise: There are no-smoking areas on the street. Smoking is prohibited inside many game centers and stores, so please follow the signs.
  • Barrier-free access: Some older buildings and stores may have steps or no elevators. Wheelchair users should check in advance.
  • Seasonal precautions: In summer, be careful of the temperature and heatstroke, and during the New Year and other long holidays, the park will be even busier with events and people returning home.
