Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Akita Museum of Art is a prefectural art museum located in the center of Akita City. The current museum is a modern building based on concrete and glass, designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, and opened in 2013 (after renovation). The building is attractive for its exposed concrete, linear spatial composition, and exhibition rooms that make use of natural light, all of which are characteristic of Ando's simple and sophisticated architecture.

The collection focuses on modern and contemporary art, and includes works by local and Japanese artists, as well as prints and paintings, and the museum regularly holds special exhibitions. One of the museum's greatest features is that visitors can enjoy both art appreciation and architecture.

Highlights

  • The architecture itself: A minimalist yet stately space designed by Tadao Ando. The way the light enters through the exposed concrete and large openings is a must-see.
  • Permanent Exhibition: A collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by artists with ties to the prefecture. You can experience the works of local artists through seasonally changing exhibits.
  • Special exhibitions: Special exhibitions based on domestic and international themes are held from time to time. Masterpieces from a wide range of genres are brought to Japan depending on the contents of the exhibition.
  • Museum Shop and Cafe: You can purchase limited edition goods and snacks at the shop and attached cafe, where you can enjoy the afterglow of the exhibition (please check opening hours).
  • Surrounding scenery: The building offers views of the nearby parks and cityscape, making it a great place to take a stroll.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Akita Station (within walking distance). It is approximately a 15-minute walk from the station, but this may vary depending on your walking speed.
  • Bus Route: City buses and circular sightseeing buses are available from the bus terminal in front of Akita Station. Get off at the bus stop heading towards Senshu Park or the city centre (please check the timetable in advance to see which route to take).

  • Permanent exhibition + special exhibition: 90 to 150 minutes (may take longer depending on the size of the exhibition)
  • If you plan to visit the architecture and stroll around the area, you will need at least two hours.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The number of visitors increases on weekends, public holidays, school spring and summer holidays, Golden Week, and the New Year holidays. The first and last days of special exhibitions also tend to be crowded.
  • Photography: There are many areas within the exhibition hall where photography is prohibited. Please follow the signs in the museum and instructions of staff regarding whether photography is permitted. Flash photography and the use of tripods are prohibited as a general rule.
  • Food and drink: Eating and drinking are prohibited inside the exhibition rooms. Please use the designated rest areas or cafes within the museum.
  • Admission fees and special exhibition fees: Permanent exhibits are generally free or have a low fee, while special exhibitions generally incur additional fees. Be sure to check in advance for fees and discounts (for high school students and younger, seniors, etc.).

  • Seasonal notes: Akita experiences heavy snowfall and strong cold winds in the winter, so please prepare cold weather gear and shoes with good grip. Also, be aware that traffic may be disrupted due to snow.
