Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Fukuyama Castle (Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture) is a castle built in the early Edo period, with construction beginning in 1619 (Genwa 5) by Mizuno Katsunari. The castle is located in the center of the castle town of Fukuyama, and has the typical appearance of a flatland castle with a moat, stone walls, and a castle tower. Although it was partially damaged during World War II, the castle tower was later restored and maintained, and is now a castle ruins park popular with local residents and tourists. The castle tower within the castle is used as a museum and observation space, and is also attractive for its views of Fukuyama city and the Seto Inland Sea.
