Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave is an underground limestone cave located in Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture. Its highlights include the stalactites, stalagmites, and underground spaces that have been formed over many years. Despite being located on a subtropical island, the temperature inside the cave remains relatively stable throughout the year, and the natural beauty and cool air are its attractions. The cave is easy to see thanks to the well-maintained pathways and lighting for tourists, allowing everyone from children to adults to enjoy the geological scenery.

Highlights

  • You can observe stalactites and stalagmites of various sizes, and the diverse formations created by limestone erosion and sedimentation over many years.
  • Contrast between illumination and natural beauty: In the illuminated space, the shadows highlight the stalactites' unique features.
  • The scale of the underground space: the expanse of the cavern, the height of the ceiling, and the impressive stalagmites hanging from the ceiling.
  • The humid air and quietness of the cave offer a refreshing escape from the heat and humidity outside.
  • (Depending on the season) Observe small creatures that live in the cave: bats and other creatures may be spotted (please observe quietly).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • There is no nearby train station: There is no train service on Ishigaki Island, so you cannot access the property by train.
  • Air: To get to Ishigaki Island, fly into New Ishigaki Airport (Painushima Ishigaki Airport). After arriving at the airport, you can travel to the island by car, bus, or taxi.
  • Car/Rental Car: This is the most convenient means of transportation for sightseeing. Renting a car is common on the island, and there are often parking lots at the limestone caves.
  • Buses and taxis: Please check the schedule in advance as there are limited buses. Taxis are convenient but expensive.
  • Estimated travel time (from the airport): It depends on traffic conditions and the location, but it will take approximately 20 to 40 minutes by car (please check local information).
  • Prior confirmation is recommended: Opening hours, admission fees, and parking availability may vary by facility, so please check official information before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Tour time: Generally, it takes about 30 minutes to an hour (about an hour if you take your time looking around and taking photos).
  • If you combine it with sightseeing in the surrounding area, you will have plenty of time if you plan on spending half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Kabira Bay: A spectacular spot that represents Ishigaki Island. It is famous for its glass-bottom boats and views.
  • Tamatorizaki Observatory: Located on the northeast side of the island, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the sea and greenery.
  • Yonehara Beach and Yonehara Reef: A popular spot for snorkeling and beach strolls.
  • Ishigaki Yaima Village (Folk facilities such as Yaima Village): A facility where you can experience the life and culture of the Yaeyama Islands.
  • Ishigaki City (Euglena Mall, etc.): This area is convenient for dining and shopping as it is home to many restaurants and souvenir shops.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The area can get crowded during peak tourist season, summer vacation, and long weekends. To avoid crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or in the evening.
  • Clothing and shoes: There are slippery areas, steps, and narrow passages inside the cave, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes (sneakers, etc.) and clothing that is easy to move in.
  • Temperature difference: The inside of the cave is often cooler than the outside air, so it is best to bring a light jacket.
  • Safety and Barrier-Free: There are many stairs and steps, so it may be difficult to visit with a wheelchair or stroller. Pregnant women and people with disabilities should consult in advance.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: The stalactites are very delicate. Please be considerate and refrain from touching or taking them home, and follow the rules regarding the use of non-illuminating light and flash photography.
  • Weather and season: Typhoon season (summer to autumn) may affect transportation and facilities on the island. In bad weather, some areas may be closed for safety reasons, so please check the latest information.
  • Photography/Pets: Whether photography and pets are permitted varies by facility. Please follow the rules.

Before visiting, be sure to check the official information and local guides for the latest opening hours, admission fees, and access information. Enjoy the unique topography and natural cave scenery of Ishigaki Island along with sightseeing in the surrounding area.
