Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Cape Chinen Park is a park on a cape jutting out into the sea, located in Chinen, Nanjo City, in the southern part of Okinawa's main island. From the cape, you can see the Pacific Ocean (the Nirai Kanai Sea) and Kudaka Island offshore (Kudaka Island has been revered as a "divine island" since the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom), and the contrast between the crystal blue water and the cliffs is captivating. The surrounding area is also close to Sefa Utaki, an ancient sacred site for the Ryukyus, and is known as an area where nature and Ryukyu culture live on.

Highlights

  • The panoramic view from the observation deck, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Kudaka Island, is particularly vivid on clear days, making it a popular spot for taking photos of the sunrise and sunset.
  • The contrast between the cliffs of the cape and the blue sea - the gradation of the reef and sea seen from the heights is a perfect example of Okinawa.
  • Walking trails and benches - Enjoy a leisurely stroll or picnic while enjoying the sea breeze (benches and observation decks are available).
  • Bird and subtropical plant observations - Depending on the season, you can observe flowers and migratory birds.
  • It's also a popular location for photo shoots and wedding photos, with its open backdrop.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • By car: Approximately 30-45 minutes via national highway from Naha Airport or central Naha (depending on road conditions). There is a free parking lot near the park, so it is convenient to rent a car or take a taxi.
  • Bus: You can access the area from Naha Bus Terminal and other areas in the prefecture by bus bound for Nanjo City, but there aren't many buses. The nearest bus stop is about a few minutes to 15 minutes' walk away. We recommend checking the timetable in advance.
  • Ferry (when combining with Kudaka Island): You can take a ferry to Kudaka Island from Azama Port and other locations (it's a good idea to combine your visit with sightseeing on Kudaka Island).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 30 minutes to 1 hour (enjoy the view and take photos)
  • Leisurely stroll and photography: 1-2 hours (walk around the cape, take breaks and enjoy the scenery)
  • Combine with sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (when combining with Sefa Utaki, Azama Port, Nirai Kanai Bridge, etc.)

Nearby spots

  • Sefa Utaki — A sacred site dating back to the Ryukyu Kingdom. A short drive from Cape Chinen, it's a cultural and religious attraction.
  • Kudaka Island (distant view) and Azama Port (Azama) — The ferry terminal for Kudaka Island. The island itself is also known as a place of worship.
  • Niraikanai Bridge - A scenic spot to enjoy while driving, and a great driving route to visit along with Cape Chinen.
  • Valley of Gangala/Okinawa World area (tourist destination in Nanjo City) — There are many caves and spots where you can explore nature.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Safety first: The cape has cliffs and unstable footing in some areas. Please be careful if you are with children or have a fear of heights and would like to stay away from the fenced areas.
  • Strong winds and sunlight: The seaside is windy and the sunlight is intense in summer. Don't forget to bring a hat, sunscreen, and drinks. Even in winter, there are days when the wind is cold.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: Please be considerate of the natural environment by not damaging plants or rocks, always taking your trash with you, and not touching coral or marine life.
  • Religious considerations: There are sacred sites such as Sefa Utaki in the vicinity. Please observe tourist etiquette and be mindful of noise and etiquette.
  • Parking/Crowding: Parking lots can be crowded during peak tourist season and at dusk. We recommend using public transportation and allowing yourself plenty of time.
  • Use of drones, etc.: The use of unmanned aerial vehicles requires consideration of regulations and local residents. Please check in advance whether flying is permitted.
