Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Cape Manazuru is a scenic coastal spot located at the tip of the Manazuru Peninsula in Manazuru Town, Ashigarashimo District, Kanagawa Prefecture. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, the peninsula has long been a fishing base and a popular navigational landmark due to its excellent views of Sagami Bay. From the cape, you can get a panoramic view of Sagami Bay, and on a clear day, you can even see Izu Oshima, Toshima, and even Mount Fuji. The contrast between the green of the pine and evergreen broad-leaved trees and the rough seashore, as well as the varied coastline, make it a popular spot for photography and strolls, where you can enjoy the tranquil seascape.
Highlights
- Viewpoint: From the observation deck at the tip of the cape or from the high ground by the sea, you can see Sagami Bay, the Izu Islands, and even Mount Fuji (depending on the conditions). The seascape changes its appearance depending on the light in the morning and evening, which is very appealing.
- Cape Promenade and Walking Trail: A promenade that circles the peninsula allows you to walk along the rocky coastline and through the pine forest. This is a course that allows you to fully enjoy nature in a short amount of time.
- Rocky beaches and fishing spots: There are tide pools and rocky areas where people enjoy playing on the rocks and fishing (be careful of the tide levels and waves).
- Port town atmosphere: Near Manazuru Port, you can enjoy the fishing port scenery and shops selling local fish, so you can enjoy seafood in between strolls.
- Seasonal Nature: Enjoy the changing scenery of each season, such as spring flowers, autumnal views of Mt. Fuji across the sea, and the clear air of winter.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: Manazuru Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line (JR East Japan)
- Walking: It takes about 20-30 minutes to walk from Manazuru Station to the cape (head towards the sea from the station, then pass the port and head towards the cape). The road is hilly.
- Bus/Taxi: Take a taxi from the front of the station for about 5-10 minutes. During the tourist season, there may be regular buses and special buses, but they are not frequent, so we recommend checking the timetable in advance.
- By car: There are small parking lots around the cape and Manazuru Port, but they are limited in number and can get crowded. It is more convenient to use public transportation.
- Access: Manazuru is easily accessible from Atami, Yugawara, and Odawara. If you are visiting for sightseeing, we recommend combining it with other nearby attractions (such as Atami Onsen).
Estimated stay (estimated time required)

- Leisurely stroll and photography: 1.5 to 2 hours (walking the promenade, taking photos, and observing the rocky shore)
- If you include meals and a visit to a market in the area: Half a day (2-4 hours)

Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: On weekends, holidays, and during the summer, the number of tourists increases, and parking lots and promenades become crowded. If you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the morning.
- Footing and Safety: Rocks and tide pools can be slippery and dangerous on rough days or at high tide. Be careful of wet rocks and sudden waves, and wear comfortable walking shoes.
- Weather and visibility: Mount Fuji and its islands are affected by the weather and the clarity of the air. It can be cold on days with strong sea breezes or rain, so please bring warm clothing and rain gear.
- Manners: To preserve the natural environment, please take your trash with you and be considerate of local lifestyles and fishing. Please follow the rules when collecting wildlife from the reefs.
- Facilities: Public toilets and shops are available around the port and in parks, but their numbers are limited, so it is best to prepare in advance if you plan to stay for a long time or during peak times.
- Pets: You can bring pets along the walking trails, but please be considerate of other users and keep them on a leash and clean up any waste.
