Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Soma Nomaoi is a traditional festival held in late July every year in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture. It is a brave festival in which warriors clad in armor ride horses. It is said to have a history of over 1,000 years, with origins dating back to the Heian and Kamakura periods as military training for samurai and Nomaoi (the capture and taming of wild horses). Today, it has developed into an event that carries on the traditions of the local samurai (the Soma clan), and has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

Its distinctive features include a large-scale armored procession, impressive horse racing and cavalry battles, and a spectacular "Shinki Sodatsusen" battle to grab the sacred flag. The dynamic movement of the traditional costumes and horses, and the enthusiasm and unity of the local community for the festival are its greatest attractions.

Highlights

  • Departure Procession (Armor Procession): A majestic procession in which warriors and cavalry in armor parade through the town. The flags, drums, and horse equipment are also worth seeing.
  • The Battle for the Sacred Flag: Dozens of horses race across the grassland, competing for the sacred flag in an intense scene. This is the highlight of the festival, and tests the horses' speed and the riders' skills.
  • Armor Horse Racing and Sword Drawing Demonstration: Horse racing and martial arts demonstrations in armor. You can see ancient weapons and horsemanship.
  • Local horse culture and exhibits: A corner where you can experience the festival atmosphere with displays of horse equipment and historical materials, as well as local stalls (food stalls).
  • Night Events and Lantern Parade (depending on the year): Some years there are night events held after sunset, offering a different experience.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Joban Line, Soma Station (Soma city center). On the day of the festival, there will often be special shuttle buses and traffic restrictions, so please check the official information.
