Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Lake Sagami is a dam lake (artificial lake) in the Sagami River basin, and is a recreation area surrounded by the lush natural beauty of the mountains. The lakeside is equipped with parks, sightseeing boat landings, boat and canoe rentals, fishing spots, and other facilities, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery of the four seasons. The lake is particularly popular for its autumn foliage, fresh greenery and cherry blossom viewing in spring, summer outdoor activities, and the large-scale winter illumination event "Sagamiko Illumination," making it a popular destination for families, couples, and outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Nearest station: JR Chuo Main Line "Sagamiko Station". From the station you can get to the lakeside on foot, by bus or taxi.
  • Approximate distance by train: Approximately 60-90 minutes from Shinjuku Station on the Chuo Line (depending on train type and connections).
  • bus: Local buses and shuttle buses may operate from Sagamiko Station to nearby facilities (such as Lake Sagami Resort). Please check the schedule in advance as special buses may operate during events.
  • car: Take the Chuo Expressway or national highway. It takes about 1 to 1.5 hours from the Tokyo metropolitan area (depending on traffic conditions). There are paid parking lots in the area, but they may be full during events or on holidays.

  • Half-day trip including boating and fishing: 3-4 hours
  • Sagamiko Resort (attractions), lunch, and relaxing: half a day to a full day

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: The area is particularly crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and the winter illumination period. Parking lots and local buses fill up quickly, so please consider leaving early or using public transportation.
  • Fishing and swimming rules: Depending on the location, a fishing license or permit may be required. Swimming is prohibited in some areas, so please follow the signs and instructions of the staff on site.
  • Safety measures:We recommend wearing a life jacket on the lake. Be aware of sudden changes in the weather and wind, and avoid reckless navigation. When hiking, be sure to bring hiking equipment, a map, and a fully charged phone.
  • Conservation of the natural environment and etiquettePlease follow the rules, such as always taking your trash with you, only using fires or barbecuing in designated areas, and not feeding wild animals.
