Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Shirayamahime Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and is considered the center of worship of Mount Hakusan (Shirayama). Founded long ago, it has long been revered as the head shrine of mountain worship (Hakusan faith). The main deity is Shirayamahime no Okami, who is worshipped for safe childbirth, matchmaking, and mountain protection. It features spacious grounds, a path surrounded by trees, a stately shrine building, and an ancient shrine forest, and is attractive for the harmony of the shrine architecture with the nature of the four seasons. The shrine has great historical and cultural value, and local festivals and traditional events are still held today.

Highlights
– Main hall and worship hall: The central facility where you can see traditional shrine architecture up close. Its calm appearance makes it a great photo spot.
– Approach and torii gate: The quiet approach surrounded by trees, stone lanterns, and large torii gate are must-sees.
- Ancient trees and Shinto Forest: Giant trees and lush forests surround the temple grounds, and their appearance changes with each season.
- Treasure museum/resource center (if available): Sacred treasures and historical documents are sometimes on display, allowing you to learn about the history of the faith (check opening hours).
- Annual events: Annual festivals and traditional events are a good opportunity to experience local culture in addition to visiting the shrine (please check the dates).
- Surrounding natural scenery: It is close to the trailhead for Mt. Hakusan and the national park, so it is recommended to combine a visit with mountain climbing or hiking.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
Nearest station: Matto Station (IR Ishikawa Railway) — Approximately 15-20 minutes by train from Kanazawa Station. Access to the shrine from the station is generally by bus, taxi, or local bus.
- Bus/Taxi: Approximately 10-20 minutes by bus or taxi from Matto Station. Please check the number of buses and timetables in advance. There may be extra buses on weekends and during festivals.
- By car: Approximately 30-40 minutes by car from Kanazawa city (depending on traffic conditions). There is often parking for visitors near the temple grounds, but the number of spaces is limited, so we recommend arriving early if it is crowded.
- Hours of operation and reception: Visitors can visit the temple at any time, but reception hours for the reception (for stamps, amulets, etc.) are generally from 9:00 to 16:00. Please check the official website for details.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Easy worship: 30 to 45 minutes (visiting the main hall and strolling around the grounds)
- Thorough worship, photography, and treasure museum tour: 1 to 1.5 hours
– If you are exploring the surrounding area or heading to the trailhead: Half a day to a full day (varies depending on the itinerary)

Nearby spots
– Mt. Hakusan (Hiking, Hakusan National Park): A sacred place for mountain worship. Be sure to check the equipment and information during the hiking and trekking season.
- Natadera Temple (Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture): An ancient temple known for its strange rock formations and gardens. Approximately 30-40 minutes by car.
- Kanazawa (Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle, Tea House District): A sightseeing highlight. Can be combined with Hakusan Hime Shrine for a day trip (approximately 30-40 minutes by car).
– Around the Tedori River and Tedori Gorge: Natural scenery and driving spots. The scenery changes with the seasons.
– Local hot springs and local cuisine spots: You can enjoy local flavors at hot springs and restaurants around Mt. Hakusan.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds during New Year's visits and festivals: The first three days of the New Year and festivals can be extremely crowded, so parking lots may fill up and you may have to wait to visit. Please consider using public transportation or going at a different time.
- Photography: Photography is generally permitted within the temple grounds, but there are certain places and times when photography is restricted, such as inside the worship hall, during festivals and ceremonies performed by priests. Please follow the posted notices and instructions.
– Clothing and etiquette: Please observe basic etiquette when visiting the shrine, such as removing your hat and praying quietly. If you are bringing pets, please check the rules within the shrine grounds in advance.
- Seasonal precautions: In winter, there will be snow and frozen roads, so be sure to bring warm clothing and anti-slip equipment. In spring and autumn, the area may be crowded with flowers and autumn leaves. If you are heading towards Mt. Hakusan, be aware of changes in the weather on the mountain.
- Check transportation options: Please check the official website or tourist information in advance for the latest information on whether local buses or special services are running, and reception hours for the gift shop.

Supplement (How to use)
– If you want to receive a goshuin at the shrine office, it is generally best to check the reception hours and ask for it after you have finished praying.
– If you plan to combine this tour with sightseeing in the surrounding area, it is best to plan your schedule taking into account travel time and parking congestion.
