Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Noboribetsu Onsen is one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Noboribetsu City, Hokkaido, and is notable for its abundant hot spring water and diverse spring qualities. Located in a volcanic area in the mountains, the area is home to a variety of spring qualities, including sulfur springs that gush forth due to geothermal activity, as well as acidic, chloride, and sulfate springs. It has long been known as a therapeutic hot spring resort, and it developed as a tourist destination from the Meiji to Taisho periods onwards. The volcanic fumaroles known as "Hell Valley" and the steaming hot spring scenery are particularly popular tourist attractions, and the hot spring town is lined with inns, hotels, foot baths, and souvenir shops.

Highlights

  • Hell Valley: A valley formed by volcanic activity. You can see the rugged landscape up close, with steam, fumaroles, and the smell of sulfur rising. There are walking paths, making it perfect for a stroll.
  • Oyunuma Pond and Oyunuma River: A large lake with hot mud and hot springs, with nature observation points and foot bath spots nearby.
  • Outdoor baths and foot baths in the hot spring town: There are day-use bathing facilities and a free foot bath, so you can easily enjoy the hot springs.
  • Bear Ranch (Noboribetsu Bear Ranch): Located on a hill that can be reached by ropeway, this tourist facility allows you to see brown bears up close.
  • Noboribetsu Date Historical Village: A theme park based on the Edo period. A variety of shows and experience events are available.
  • Yukata culture and kaiseki cuisine at hot spring innsDining at a ryokan and bathing in a hot spring are pleasures unique to Noboribetsu. You can enjoy dishes made with local seafood and seasonal ingredients.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus
    • JR: The nearest train station is Noboribetsu Station. Accessible from Sapporo by limited express train (e.g. Super Hokuto). Travel time varies depending on the train type, so please check the timetable.
    • It takes about 15 to 20 minutes by bus or taxi from Noboribetsu Station to the hot spring town.
  • From the airport
    • From New Chitose Airport, you can take a direct bus (airport shuttle bus) or an express bus to Noboribetsu Onsen. The travel time depends on traffic conditions, but it usually takes about 40 minutes to an hour.
  • car
    • From Sapporo: Approximately 1.5-2 hours (depending on road conditions).
    • Accessible from Otaru and Chitose via expressways and public roads. There are parking lots and inn parking lots in the hot spring town.
  • Note: Schedules and travel times may change depending on the season and operation, so please check JR and bus timetables and road information before setting off.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • A short walk + foot bath: 1-2 hours
  • Jigokudani walk + outdoor bath + meal (day trip): 4-6 hours
  • Relax and enjoy the hot springs and dinner and breakfast. Staying one night is recommended. Two nights will allow you to fully explore the surrounding area.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: Both overnight and day-use facilities will be crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, New Year's, national holidays, and consecutive weekends. If you are planning to stay overnight, we recommend making reservations early.
  • Hot Spring MannersPlease observe general hot spring etiquette, such as washing your body before bathing, not putting towels in the bathtub, and bathing quietly. Depending on the facility, you may not be allowed to bathe with tattoos or may be asked to cover them. Please check in advance.
  • Safety around Jigokudani:Areas with fumaroles and hot water are extremely hot and dangerous. Do not enter restricted areas or cross fences. Be especially careful if you are traveling with small children.
  • Seasonal precautionsIn winter, snow and frozen roads can make roads and walking paths slippery. Be sure to take measures to protect yourself from the cold and prevent slipping. In summer, the perceived temperature can change depending on the sunlight and hot spring heat, so be sure to stay hydrated.
  • Water temperature and health: The hot spring water may be very hot, so please check the temperature before bathing and take care of your health by avoiding long baths and bathing after drinking alcohol.
  • environmental conservation: To protect the natural environment and hot spring resources, please refrain from taking your trash with you and from using fire anywhere other than designated areas.
