Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Gyokusendo Cave is a representative limestone cave located in Nanjo City in the southern part of Okinawa's main island, and is the central attraction of the tourist facility "Okinawa World (Cultural Kingdom Gyokusendo Cave)." The cave is densely packed with stalactites and stalagmites, carved over the course of many years from Ryukyu limestone, and the illuminated areas create a fantastical landscape. The cave stretches for approximately 5 km, of which approximately 850-900 m is dedicated to tourism (promenades). The cave is cooler year-round than the outside air, and its unique humidity and tranquility allow visitors to experience the beauty of nature up close. The area around Gyokusendo offers a comprehensive experience of Okinawa's traditions and nature, with exhibits and experiences on Ryukyu culture, a Habu snake show, and folk craft workshops.
Highlights
– Stalactite and stalagmite colonies: You can observe limestone formations of various shapes up close, including narrow columns and large ceiling stones. The lighting creates a different look than during the day.
- Light and shadow effects: The lighting inside the cave brings out the three-dimensional effect and colors, creating many photogenic spots.
- Long walking trails: You can explore the cave's varied topography and small underground spaces while walking.
-Okinawa World Events: Cultural experiences are available in addition to cave tours, including Eisa dance performances, folk craft making experiences, Habu exhibitions and shows, Ryukyu costumes, and glass workshops.
- Nature observation point: You can also learn about geological phenomena, such as the formation process of stalactites inside the cave and the underground wetland environment.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The cave gets crowded during peak periods such as Golden Week, summer vacation, and the New Year holidays. When crowded, the passageways inside the cave are narrow, so it may take some time to move around. If you want to take your time looking around, we recommend visiting on a weekday or early in the morning.
- Manners: Stalactites are very delicate. If you touch them, the oils on their surface will inhibit their growth, so never touch them. Please also follow basic rules such as staying on the sidewalk and taking your trash with you.
- Footing and clothing: The cave is humid and the floor can be slippery in places. Wear comfortable shoes (sneakers, etc.) and a thin jacket for comfort (it feels cooler than outside throughout the year).
- Barrier-free access: Due to sidewalks and stairs, there are some areas where movement with wheelchairs or strollers is restricted. Please check the official information in advance to confirm the facilities and barrier-free status.
– Weather: As it is an indoor facility, it is possible to visit even in rainy weather, but nearby outdoor attractions and traffic may be affected.
- Pets and smoking: Pets (except guide dogs, etc.) and smoking are often restricted by facility policy. Please follow the facility's guidelines.
- Check official information: Opening hours, fees, and events are subject to change. For the latest information, please check the official Okinawa World/Gyokusendo Cave website or local information.
