Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Genbudo Cave is a rock landscape in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, where columnar joints can be seen. It is an exposed basalt dyke that was formed when lava flowing from a volcano broke into hexagonal columns as it cooled. The sight of the neat, black, columnar rocks lined up in layers is extremely majestic, and it is known as a valuable geological landscape. The surrounding area has been turned into a park, and it is equipped with observation trails and an observation deck, as well as explanatory panels and a museum as part of the geopark, making it a popular tourist spot for observing geology and nature.
