Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Lake Inawashiro, centered around Inawashiro Town in Fukushima Prefecture, is the fourth largest lake in Japan (with an area of approximately 103 km²). Formed by volcanic activity and changes in the surrounding topography, it is particularly famous for its mirror-like reflection of Mount Bandai towering behind it, earning it the nickname "Heavenly Mirror." The lake's exceptional clarity makes it a charming place, showcasing different faces throughout the seasons. In summer, it's popular for marine sports and swimming, while in autumn, the contrast between the autumn foliage of Mount Bandai and the lake's surface is a sight to behold, and in winter, it's bustling with migratory birds (such as whooper swans). The surrounding area is packed with hot springs, hiking trails, and tourist facilities, allowing visitors to enjoy a wide range of activities, from nature observation to active pursuits.
Highlights
– Tenkyodai (observation deck): A classic spot where you can see the spectacular view of Mt. Bandai reflected on the lake surface. The view changes depending on the light in the morning and evening.
- Lakeside view spots (Inawashiro Lakeside Park, etc.)...Enjoy the scenery from the walking paths and benches.
- Marine activities: Windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, SUP, and other wind-based sports are popular. Rentals and lessons are also available (seasonal).

- Fishing and cycling: There are fishing spots and cycling trails around the lake, allowing you to relax and enjoy nature to the fullest.
- Sunsets and starry skies: You can enjoy the sunset from the lakeside, and with little light in the surrounding area, it's also ideal for stargazing at night.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The surrounding roads and parking lots tend to be congested during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and consecutive holidays. Early morning and evening times are recommended.
- Weather and wind: The lake can get windy, so be sure to check the weather and equipment before engaging in water sports. Wear a life jacket when using a boat or kayak.
- Winter precautions: Road conditions worsen due to snow and ice, so winter tires and chains are necessary. Also, do not go on the ice as safety is not guaranteed in many places.
- Nature conservation and etiquette: Always take your trash home/to the designated area. Refrain from feeding migratory birds and wild animals (this can be harmful to the ecosystem and your health).
- Tourist facility opening hours: Many facilities change opening hours and dates depending on the season, so it is recommended to check in advance.
- Safety management: When engaging in activities in the mountains or on lakes, be sure to be well prepared and have means of communication (cell phone, companions). Don’t forget to take care of your health and prepare for temperature changes.
