Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Makino Botanical Garden is located on Mount Godai in Kochi City and was opened in honor of Dr. Makino Tomitaro, one of Japan's leading botanists. Dr. Makino is the person who laid the foundation for plant taxonomy in Japan, and the garden also houses a memorial hall that displays materials and specimens related to him.

The garden is characterized by its landscaping that makes use of the mountain slope, allowing visitors to observe a diverse range of plants throughout the four seasons. It has a strong collection of native plants, primarily from Kochi Prefecture and Shikoku, and visitors can also see plants named and described by Dr. Makino, as well as rare and endemic species. It features a greenhouse (displaying tropical and subtropical plants), a theme garden, walking paths, and observation spots, and while it's close to the city, it's an attractive spot for enjoying nature studies, photography, and seasonal flower viewing.

Highlights

  • Makino Tomitaro Memorial Museum and exhibits: An exhibition that allows visitors to learn about the doctor's achievements, specimens, letters, and research history.
  • Diverse plant collection: There is an abundance of native plants, mountain plants, and seasonal flowers such as rhododendrons, cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, and azaleas.
  • greenhouse: You can observe tropical and subtropical plants, rare orchids, epiphytes, and more.
  • Walking trails and views: There is a spot where you can enjoy views of Kochi city and the Pacific Ocean from the walking path that climbs the slopes of Mt. Godai.
  • Nature Observation Programs and Events: Guided tours, lectures, and seasonal events (such as flower festivals) are sometimes held.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

It is located on the slopes of Mt. Godai in Kochi City and can be accessed by both public transport and car.

  • Public transportation precautions: Routes and times change depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the Kochi City transportation timetable or the park's official website before visiting.

  • If you want to take your time observing and taking photos: 2 to 3 hours
  • Quick tour of the main sights: 1-1.5 hours
  • If you want to take your time to look at the exhibits and explanations, please allow an additional 30 to 60 minutes.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: It can get crowded during the peak flower season (cherry blossoms and rhododendrons in spring, fresh greenery in early summer, and autumn leaves in autumn) and during consecutive holidays. The parking lot may fill up on weekends, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Clothing and equipment:There are many uneven walking paths in the park, so wear comfortable shoes. Be careful as the paths can become slippery in rainy weather.
  • Seasonal precautions: In summer, be careful of sunlight and insects (especially mosquitoes and bees in mountainous areas). In winter, it can get cold on the mountain side.
  • Manners: Collecting or taking home plants is prohibited. Please obey signs and restricted areas. Dispose of trash in the designated areas. Do not touch exhibits or specimens.
  • Pets: Some parks have restrictions on pets allowed in and rules on leashes. Please check in advance.
  • Barrier-free: There are many slopes and some areas are not fully barrier-free. Wheelchair users should check the entrances and facilities in advance to ensure safety.

Before visiting, please check the official website of Makino Botanical Gardens or the Kochi City tourist information site for the latest opening hours, closing days, admission fees, and event information. Enjoy the changing scenery of this garden, which combines nature, history, and education, with the seasons.
