Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Chichibugahama Beach is a tidal flat-like coastline in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture. The tide pools and wet sand that spread out at low tide create mirror-like reflections, making it a popular spot among photography enthusiasts, known as "Japan's Uyuni Salt Flats." Originally a place primarily used by local fishermen and beachgoers, it quickly became a tourist destination thanks to social media and exposure from photographers. Its greatest draw is the spectacle of the sky, sea, and silhouettes of people reflected on the water's surface at sunset, and an increasing number of people from both Japan and abroad are visiting in search of romantic scenery and creative photography.

Highlights

  • Mirror-like reflective sandy beach: At low tide, shallow pools of water remain, creating a spectacular view where the sky and people are reflected like a mirror.
  • Sunset time: The time when the sun sinks below the horizon is especially popular. The orange to purple gradation reflected on the water's surface makes for great photos.
  • Observing the creatures living in the tidal flats: Small fish, crabs, and shellfish can be seen in the tide pools, making it a great place to observe nature with children.
  • Seasonal changes: From spring to autumn you can enjoy the calm evening scenery, and in winter the sky is clear and quiet.
  • Photo spot: Enjoy a variety of photography styles, including low-angle shots and long exposures using a wide-angle lens and tripod.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Taxi: The nearest JR station is Takuma Station on the Yosan Line. From Takuma Station, it is about a 10-20 minute taxi ride (depending on road conditions).
  • By car: From Takamatsu, take the Takamatsu Expressway and Sanuki Toyonaka IC or Sanuki Mitoyo IC for about an hour. There is a public parking lot. However, it may fill up during peak seasons and in the evenings, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Expressway buses and local buses: Please check the timetable in advance as buses operate only during certain seasons and have limited service. If you are traveling by public transport, it is best to allow ample time for connections.
  • From the airport: Approximately 1 hour by car from Takamatsu Airport.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Photography and walking: 1-2 hours (if you come at low tide)
  • If you want to take your time taking photos of the sunset: 2-3 hours (including the time before and after low tide will give you plenty of time)
  • If you include sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots

  • Kotohiki Park (Kanonji City) and Zenigata Sand Art: Approximately 20-30 minutes by car. You can enjoy the view of the Zenigata Sand Art from the observation point.
  • Local Udon Restaurants: Sanuki udon restaurants, unique to Kagawa, are scattered around the area. You can stop by during your sightseeing.
  • Coastal drive in Mitoyo City: We also recommend taking in the scenery of the nearby coastline and small fishing villages.
  • Remote island sightseeing by ferry (departing from Takamatsu): If you have time, you can also take a boat trip from Takamatsu to tour the islands.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Check the low tide times: The mirror effect is highly dependent on the tide level. Before visiting, check the low tide times using tide tables and weather forecasts, and plan your visit to coincide with low tide.
  • Crowds: It gets especially crowded on weekends, holidays, and in the evenings. The parking lot may fill up, so it's best to go early in the morning or on a weekday.
  • Manners: Respect the local living environment and always take your trash with you. Do not enter restricted areas or private property. Be considerate of people around you when taking photos (for example, do not take photos of others without permission).
  • Safety: Although the beach is shallow, the tides change and there are slippery areas. It is best to keep an eye on children and the elderly, and wear shoes and clothing that you don't mind getting wet or dirty. Please refrain from swimming or engaging in activities in deep waters (there are no permanent lifeguards on duty).
  • Use of drones, etc.: When flying a drone, please observe local rules and aviation laws, and be considerate of those around you. You may need permission. Please check in advance.
  • Seasonal precautions: In summer, the sun is strong and hot, so take precautions against heatstroke. In winter, the wind is strong and cold, so dress warmly. During the rainy season and stormy weather, the sea surface conditions are poor, so it is best to avoid visiting for safety.

Chichibugahama Beach is a special place where you can enjoy the natural formations and light. Please check the tide levels and weather before visiting, and be mindful of manners and safety.
