Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Atami Castle is a castle-style building built as a tourist facility near the summit of Shiroyama (approximately 100m above sea level) in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is not an original castle, but was rebuilt in 1959 (Showa 34) as a tourist attraction, and is a "mock castle tower" that differs from an actual castle from the Sengoku period. Its appeal lies in its panoramic views of Sagami Bay and Atami city below, and the building is popular with families and tourists alike, with displays of armor and weapons, a history experience corner, museum-style exhibits, and a souvenir shop. Other attractions include the night view, views across the sea, and seasonal events (it can also serve as a base for viewing cherry blossoms, illuminations, and fireworks).
Highlights
- Observation deck: A 360-degree panorama from the top floor of the castle tower. On a clear day, you can see Sagami Bay, the Izu Peninsula, and even the Boso Peninsula in the distance.
- Armor and weaponry exhibits: There are exhibits of armor, swords, and other items, and there are also spots where photography is allowed (there are restrictions on photography depending on the exhibits).
- History and culture exhibits: There are often explanatory panels and interactive exhibits about the Sengoku period and local history, which children can enjoy.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- It is a replica castle tower, not a real castle, but a tourist facility. If you are looking to see historical remains, please check in advance.
- Slopes and stairs: The road from the station has steep slopes and stairs, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Be careful as the road can be slippery in rainy weather.
- Crowds: The facility is extremely crowded during Golden Week, the summer beach season, the New Year's holiday, and fireworks festivals. Parking lots and buses around the facility are often crowded during peak times, so it's best to arrive early.
- Photography etiquette: Flash photography and touching of exhibits may be prohibited. Please follow the warning signs inside the museum.
- Barrier-free access: There are steps and stairs in some areas of the premises. If you are using a wheelchair or a stroller, please check in advance whether the facility is accessible.
- Weather: The view from the observation deck is subject to the weather. In winter, the air is clear and visibility is good, but the sea breeze is strong and you need to prepare for the cold.
