Sesoko Island (Motobu Town, Okinawa Prefecture) — Overview (History, Features, and Attractions)

Sesoko Island is a small, remote island located north of the Motobu Peninsula, and is connected to the main island by the Sesoko Bridge. Facing the East China Sea, it is known for its crystal clear waters, beautiful white sand beaches, and nearly untouched coral reefs, making it a popular spot for diving and snorkeling. Historically, it developed as a small fishing village, and the island still retains its rich marine resources and simple island lifestyle. Although tourism is on the rise, its greatest appeal lies in the fact that you can enjoy the laid-back island life and beautiful sea.

Highlights

  • Sesoko Beach: Boasting white sand and crystal clear water, it is perfect for swimming, sunbathing and relaxing on the beach.
  • Snorkeling and diving spots: You can see corals and tropical fish even from shallow waters, and on days with good visibility you can even see shallow reefs. There are also many trial diving tours available.
  • View of Sesoko BridgeThe view of the ocean from the bridge is of beautiful gradations of blue, making it a great spot for driving and taking photos.
  • Island restaurants and cafes: There are small restaurants and cafes scattered around the island that serve fresh seafood and Okinawan cuisine. You can enjoy Okinawa soba and seafood bowls.
  • Sunset/starry sky: It is also ideal for watching the sunset over the open sea and stargazing as there is little artificial light.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest train station: There are no trains on the main island of Okinawa, so there is no nearest train station.
  • From the airport: Naha Airport is the nearest international airport. You can head towards Motobu Town by rental car, express bus, or local bus. The estimated travel time by car will depend on road conditions, but it will take approximately two hours (it may take longer during busy times).
  • By bus: There are routes to get there by taking express or local buses from Naha, changing at Motobu or Nago. Routes and times change depending on the season, so we recommend checking in advance.
  • Car/Rental Car: This is the most convenient option. Access the island by crossing the Sesoko Bridge. Parking is available around the beach, but may be full during peak season.
  • Approximate travel time from nearby facilities: 15-25 minutes by car from Churaumi Aquarium (Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium), 30-50 minutes by car from central Nago City.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip beach snorkeling: Half day to full day (3 to 8 hours)
  • Serious sea activities including diving: 1-2 days
  • Enjoy the island atmosphere (dining, strolling, watching the sunset): One night stay recommended

Nearby spots

  • Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (Motobu Town): This world-famous aquarium is about a 15-25 minute drive from Sesoko Island.
  • Bise Fukugi Tree Avenue (Motobu Town): A tunnel of trees perfect for a stroll. Enjoy the picturesque scenery.
  • Nakijin Castle Ruins (Nakijin Village): A castle ruin that is a component part of a World Heritage Site. Perfect for a historical stroll.
  • Kouri Island and Kouri Bridge (Nago and Nakijin area): Beautiful beaches and driving spots. Convenient for sightseeing in the northern part of the island, including Sesoko Island.
  • Small fishing ports and cafes around Sesoko Island: There are cafes offering cuisine made with local ingredients and overlooking the sea.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion:The beaches and parking lots tend to be crowded during the summer tourist season (July to August), Golden Week, and the Obon festival, so we recommend visiting early in the morning or in the evening.
  • safety:Ocean conditions can change quickly, so be sure to check whether there are lifeguards on duty and the sea conditions (swells and currents) before swimming. Be especially careful if you are traveling with children.
  • Manners and Environmental Conservation:Please do not touch, step on or take away any coral or living creatures. We recommend using environmentally friendly (reef-safe) sunscreen.
  • Consideration for living creatures:Please do not get too close to wildlife such as sea turtles and tropical fish, and do not feed them. Some of these creatures are protected species.
  • Facilities and sales:There aren't many commercial facilities on the island, so it's a good idea to prepare drinks and other essentials in advance. It's also a good idea to make reservations in advance for rental equipment (snorkels, etc.).
  • weather:During typhoon season (mainly summer to autumn), there is a risk of closures, cancellations, and worsening sea conditions, so please check the weather forecast and operation information immediately before your trip.

Sesoko Island is a spot where you can easily enjoy the beautiful sea of northern Okinawa. Please enjoy the clear waters and relaxed island life while observing the rules of coexistence with nature.
