Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Yushima Tenmangu Shrine (commonly known as Yushima Tenjin or Yushima Tenmangu) is a Tenmangu shrine located in Yushima, Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, and is known for enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning. Since ancient times, it has attracted believers praying for academic success and passing exams, and many worshippers visit during exam season. The plum blossoms within the shrine grounds are particularly famous, and in early spring many visitors come to see the flowers in full bloom. The shrine also holds a Plum Festival every year, featuring tea ceremonies, street stalls, and traditional performing arts.

Highlights

  • Plum Grove (Early Spring Plums) - Various varieties of plum blossoms fill the temple grounds with sweet fragrance and gorgeous scenery. This is a popular photo spot.
  • Main Hall and Worship Hall - A majestic shrine dedicated to the god of learning. During exam season, the hall is bustling with votive plaques offering prayers for success.
  • Ema (votive plaques) and amulets — There are many prayer plaques for passing exams and amulets for academic success available. Applications and amulets may also be sent by mail (please check official information as procedures may change depending on the time of year).
  • Stroking Cow (Ushizo) - Stroking the head of this cow is said to be good for academic achievement and health. It has a glossy finish due to worshippers stroking it.
  • Plum Festival (February-March every year) — Enjoy lively events such as tea ceremonies, local performing arts, and food stalls.
  • Goshuin (temple stamps) - Goshuin stamps are given out within the temple grounds and are a popular souvenir of your visit (check the official website for details on when they are given out and how to receive them).

  • Worship Manners: Please observe basic shrine etiquette, such as putting your offering in the offering box, bowing twice, clapping twice, and bowing once. Please remain quiet within the shrine grounds.
  • Photography: Photography is permitted in many places, but please refrain from taking photos that may disturb festivals, religious ceremonies, or other worshippers. Please obey signs prohibiting photography indoors, at shrines, and other places.
  • Garbage/Eating and Drinking: The temple grounds are a clean place. Please take your garbage with you or dispose of it in designated areas. Eating and drinking should be done in designated areas or outside the temple grounds.
  • Cold weather and rain gear: There are still many cold days and rainy days during the plum season, so please bring warm clothing and an umbrella.
  • To reduce congestion on access routes: We recommend using public transportation during events. Nearby roads and parking lots will be congested.
