Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Urauchi River is a representative river that flows through Iriomote Island (Taketomi Town) in the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa Prefecture, and is known as one of the longest rivers in Okinawa Prefecture. The mangrove forests and subtropical virgin forests that spread from the river mouth to the upper reaches nurture a unique ecosystem and are a habitat for a variety of creatures, including the Iriomote wildcat. The area around the Urauchi River is part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, and is also a base for visiting remote waterfalls (such as Pinaisara Falls) that are only accessible by pleasure boat or canoe. Jungle cruises, trekking, and kayaking are popular activities here.

Highlights

  • Mangrove forest landscape:The mangrove trees that line the river mouth are a sight to behold, and the unique scenery created by the tidal flats and roots makes for great photos.
  • Sightseeing boat and canoe tours:Tours heading upstream on a pleasure boat or a guided kayak trip down the river are popular, and you can listen to explanations about the ecology and history of the river from the guide.
  • Access to Pinaisara Falls:Pinaisara Falls, located upstream of the Urauchi River, is one of Iriomote Island's most famous waterfalls. The impressive scenery around the waterfall basin is a highlight (many plans include a sightseeing tour and trekking).
  • Bird and wildlife observation:The mangrove area is a treasure trove of wild birds, crabs, and fish, and you can also enjoy observing the creatures on the tidal flats.
  • Primeval forest trekking:Forest trekking is often combined with sightseeing, allowing you to observe subtropical plants and giant trees up close.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

There is no train line to Iriomote Island (Taketomi Town), so the nearest access is from Ishigaki Island. Here are the general directions:

  • First, fly to Ishigaki Island.
  • Take a high-speed boat or ferry from Ishigaki Port (Ishigaki Island) to Iriomote Island (Uehara Port/Ohara Port, etc.). The travel time varies depending on the boat and port (approximately 30-50 minutes by high-speed boat, around 1 hour by ferry).
  • After arriving on Iriomote Island, take a local bus, rental car, or taxi from Uehara Port or Ohara Port to the area near the mouth of the Urauchi River. It is relatively close to the tourist base (Uehara area), so you can travel there by car or bus.
  • Sightseeing boats and kayaks on the Urauchi River depart from the dock at the river mouth (operated by local tourist operators). Sightseeing boats and tours can be booked locally, but we recommend making reservations in advance during peak seasons.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term sightseeing boat (only around the river mouth): 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Round trip by sightseeing boat to the Pinaisara Falls area + easy walk: 2-3 hours
  • Canoe (half-day tour): Half day (approximately 3-5 hours)
  • Canoeing + Pinaisara Falls trekking full package: Half day to full day (5 to 8 hours)

Nearby spots

  • Pinaisara Falls:One of the most popular spots for sightseeing along the Urauchi River. You can enjoy viewing the waterfall and trekking in the surrounding area.
  • Trekking courses on Iriomote Island:Various trails through virgin forest (guided tours recommended).
  • Uehara and Ohara villages:It is home to restaurants, accommodations, rental car and tour companies, and serves as a base for sightseeing on the island.
  • Nearby ocean and snorkeling spots:You can also enjoy the sea on the beaches around Iriomote Island or on remote island tours (you can combine this with the tour schedule).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Nature conservation and rule compliance:The Urauchi River is a precious natural environment that includes a national park area. Please observe good manners, such as not touching or taking away any plants or living creatures, and always taking your trash with you.
  • congestion:Sightseeing boats and kayak tours tend to be crowded during the summer peak season and long weekends. Morning tours are especially popular, so if you want to be sure to participate, we recommend making a reservation in advance.
  • Weather and sea conditions:Tours may be canceled in bad weather, strong winds, or when a typhoon is approaching. Ferries between Ishigaki and Iriomote are also prone to cancellations, so please plan your trip with plenty of time.
  • Insect protection and clothing:As it is a subtropical region, there are seasons when mosquitoes and blackflies are common. Please bring long sleeves, long pants, and insect repellent. There are also slippery areas, so trekking shoes are recommended.
  • What to bring:Drinking water, hat, sunscreen, waterproof bag (for valuables and camera), spare clothes, cash (cards may not be accepted on the island).
  • safety:Kayaking requires knowledge of paddling and currents. Beginners should join a guided tour. The rocks and paths around the waterfall are slippery and dangerous, so do not push yourself too hard.
  • season:Be aware of the heat and strong sunlight in summer, and weather changes during the rainy season and typhoon season (generally June to October). There are warm days in winter, but sea conditions and winds change with the seasons.

―――

Note: Tour content, operation status, and transportation methods may vary depending on the season and operator, so please check the latest information on Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island transportation times and local tour operators before visiting.
