■ Overview (history, characteristics, appeal)
Joren Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture (formerly Amagi-Yugashima), and is known for its beautiful scenery of clear streams and deep forest. The waterfall is said to have a drop of about 25m (though this varies slightly depending on the source), and the crystal clear water, mossy rocks, and the tranquil atmosphere created by the surrounding virgin forest attract visitors. The water around the falls is suitable for growing wasabi, and the nearby wasabi fields and waterwheels, as well as wasabi-related souvenirs and food and drink (such as wasabi soft serve), are also tourist attractions. The place is often featured in literary figures, folk songs, and popular songs, and is often associated with Izu's nature and the "Crossing Amagi Pass."
■Highlights
– The power of the cascading waterfall and the mist: The water flow is beautiful when viewed up close from the observation deck. After rain or when the snow melts, the water volume increases, making the water even more impressive.
- Wasabi fields and waterwheel: Traditional wasabi fields using clear spring water and a restored waterwheel add to the atmosphere. A popular photo spot.
– The surrounding virgin forest and moss landscape: The moss-covered rocks and trees in the valley and the seasonal vegetation (fresh greenery, autumn leaves) are beautiful.
- Food and souvenirs: At the shops around the waterfall, you can enjoy processed wasabi products (such as wasabi pickles and wasabi soft serve ice cream) and local snacks.
- Photo spots and walking trails: In addition to the observation deck where you can see the waterfall head-on, you can also view the waterfall and valley from different angles from the walking trails.
■Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- By car: From Tokyo, take the Tomei Expressway to Numazu IC, or from Susono/Nagaizumi, take the Izu Jukan Expressway, National Route 136, and Izu Chuo Expressway towards Izu City. There are paid and free parking lots (limited spaces) near the waterfall. As the road is in the mountains, please be careful of the road surface and visibility in winter and on rainy days.
- Train + Bus: From Shuzenji Station on the Izu Hakone Railway or stations heading towards Ito or Izu Kogen, it is common to take a local bus (such as Tokai Bus) and get off at the "Joren-no-Taki" bus stop. Bus services are limited, so we recommend checking the timetable in advance.
- Walking: From the parking lot or bus stop, you will need to walk along a footpath and down some stairs to reach the observation deck (walking time varies depending on the section, from a few minutes to 10 minutes).
*Please note that the number of public transportation services varies greatly depending on the season and day of the week, so please check bus and train schedules before visiting.
■ Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short course: If you just want to view the waterfall from the observation deck, take photos, and then return, it will take about 30 minutes to an hour.
- Leisurely course: 1-2 hours if you want to stroll around and see the surrounding wasabi fields and shops. If you combine it with nearby hiking or other spots, plan for half a day to the whole day.
■ Nearby spots
– Amagi Pass and the old road over Amagi: Enjoy the scenery of the stone pavement, monuments bearing poems, and mountain paths (suitable for hiking).
– Shuzenji Onsen: Enjoy a stroll through the hot spring town, a foot bath, and traditional townscape (approximately 20-30 minutes by car).
- Kawazu (Kawazu Cherry Blossoms) and Kawazu Seven Waterfalls: Seasonal events and tours of multiple waterfalls (within driving distance).
- Tourist destinations in Izunokuni and Ito: The location is easy to combine with tourist spots along the coastline and Izu Kogen.
■Points to note (crowds, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: It gets crowded on weekends, holidays (Golden Week, Obon), and during the autumn foliage and cherry blossom seasons, and the parking lot tends to fill up. We recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the morning.
- Footing and safety: The observation deck and promenade have stone steps and slippery areas. Wear comfortable shoes and be careful not to fall on rainy or icy days. You will get wet around the waterfall.
- Manners: To protect nature, do not step on vegetation, take your trash with you, and refrain from eating, drinking, or sitting anywhere other than designated areas. Do not enter wasabi fields, etc. as they may be privately owned.
- Photography: The use of tripods and drones may be restricted depending on the location and time. When flying drones, comply with local rules and regulations.
- Climate: The valley is cooler than the plains, and can feel chilly even in summer. In winter, roads may freeze and snow may accumulate, so consider bringing winter gear and tire chains.
– Public transport: Buses run infrequently. Make sure to check the time of your return trip (the last bus may leave early).
If you keep the above in mind, Joren Falls is a great spot to enjoy the purity and elegance of nature in a short amount of time. Taking your time to explore the surrounding area will make your visit even more fulfilling.
