Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Minakami Onsen is the general name for a hot spring resort in Minakami Town, Tone District, Gunma Prefecture. Surrounded by beautiful valleys carved by the Tone River and its tributaries, the area is characterized by its seasonal natural beauty, with the Tanigawa mountain range as a backdrop. In the past, it developed as a hot spring resort, and since the Meiji period, it has been developed as a tourist destination. The quality of the spring water varies depending on the facility, with some being bicarbonate springs and others being sodium-calcium springs, and many of the hot springs are known for being gentle on the skin and are known as "beauty waters."

The area's appeal lies in its combination of hot springs and activities. Outdoor tourism, such as mountain stream rafting, canyoning, skiing and snow activities, mountain climbing, and autumn leaf viewing, is popular and can be enjoyed throughout the year. With a wide selection of inns, day-trip hot spring facilities, and lodgings with open-air baths, it's also ideal for a staycation where you can relax in the hot spring town.

Highlights

  • Tanigawadake and Tanigawadake Ropeway
One of the Kanto region's leading hiking and scenic spots, you can easily take a ropeway from the foot of the mountain to enjoy the high-altitude scenery, and the remaining snow in spring, alpine plants in summer, and autumn leaves are spectacular.
  • Tone River Rafting and Canyoning
There are courses for everyone from beginners to advanced skiers, and many guided half-day and full-day tours are available. It's a popular summer activity.
  • Takaragawa Onsen
This hot spring is famous for its huge open-air bath and mixed bathing. The rustic open-air bath, located along the mountain stream, is perfect for taking photos, and day trips are also possible (though you may have to wait when it gets busy).
  • Day trip to the hot spring town
You can tour the hot springs by taking advantage of day trip plans at small public baths and inns. There are also many facilities where you can enjoy hot spring water straight from the source.
  • Winter Snow Activities
There is a ski resort nearby, so you can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, etc. in the winter. Soaking in the hot springs while watching the snowy scenery is an exceptional experience.
  • Local gourmet
Local cuisine using maitake mushrooms, mountain stream fish from the Tone River (such as char), and local soba noodles can all be enjoyed at restaurants in the hot spring town.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Railway
The nearest station is Minakami Station on the JR Joetsu Line. From Tokyo, transfer at Tokyo Station → (Joetsu Shinkansen) → Takasaki Station, then take the JR Joetsu Line to Minakami Station. The estimated travel time, including transfers, is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. If you are using the Joetsu Shinkansen at Jomo-Kogen Station, you can also access the area by bus from the station.
  • car
Take the Kan-etsu Expressway (Kan-etsu Expressway) and use Tsukiyono IC or Minakami IC. It takes about 2 hours from Tokyo if there is no traffic. A car navigation system and winter chains are essential (chains are required in winter).
  • Expressway buses and local buses
Direct buses are sometimes available during seasonal and tourist seasons. It is convenient to use local buses and tourist buses to get to Minakami Station and major tourist destinations.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: Hot spring bathing and light sightseeing in the surrounding area (Takaragawa Onsen and walking around) takes about 6 to 8 hours.
  • 2 days, 1 night: Perfect for enjoying hot springs and outdoor activities (rafting and ropeway). Enjoy the outdoors on the first day, then relax with hot springs and local cuisine in the evening.
  • 2 nights or more: Recommended for a relaxing stay that includes mountain climbing, multiple activities, and sightseeing in the surrounding area (visiting nearby tourist attractions).
  • Estimated duration for each activity: Rafting half a day to a full day, Tanigawadake Ropeway and a short walk 2-4 hours, relaxing in the hot springs 1-3 hours.

Nearby spots

  • Mt. Tanigawa (mountain climbing and ropeway)
  • Takaragawa Onsen (famous for its mixed-gender open-air bath)
  • Minakami Kogen (golf, natural park)
  • Suwa Gorge (walking trails and beautiful valley)
  • Tsukiyono Vidro Park (seasonal events such as glass craft experiences)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion
Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, New Year's holiday, and winter ski season tend to be busy for both overnight stays and day trips. We recommend making reservations in advance and arriving early at popular inns and day trip facilities.
  • Hot Spring Manners
Please observe general Japanese hot spring etiquette, such as washing your body in the washing area before bathing, not putting towels in the bath, and avoiding occupying the bath for long periods of time. Some facilities will refuse bathing to those with tattoos, so if you have any concerns, please check in advance.
  • Seasonal precautions
In winter, there is snowfall, frozen roads, and chain restrictions. If you are visiting by car, be sure to bring winter tires and chains. In spring, the amount of water for rafting increases due to melting snow, so please check your level and clothing. In summer, the mornings and evenings can be chilly due to the difference in altitude.
  • Nature and Mountaineering Safety
The weather in mountain areas such as Mt. Tanigawa is prone to sudden changes, and many trails are for experienced hikers. Be sure to share your equipment, weather information, and an action plan. Consider taking measures to prevent accidents and hiring a guide.
  • Cash and equipment
Small restaurants and souvenir shops may only accept cash. Public transportation may have limited service at certain times, so it's a good idea to check your means of transportation back home in advance.

When planning your trip, booking accommodations and activities according to your purpose (hot springs, outdoor activities, season) will ensure a fulfilling stay. If necessary, we can also suggest seasonal plans (rafting + hot springs in spring, autumn leaves + ropeway, skiing + snow-viewing baths in winter, etc.). Please let us know if you have any preferences.
