Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Matsushiro Castle is a castle ruin in the Matsushiro district of Nagano City. It dates back to the Sengoku period and was the center of the Matsushiro domain, ruled by the Sanada clan, during the Edo period. It was also known as Kaizu Castle in the past. While the castle tower no longer remains, remains of earthworks, dry moats, and other structures, as well as the castle townscape from the domain era, remain in good condition, making it a popular base for historical walks and touring historical sites related to the Sanada clan. Another attractive feature is the concentration of attractions around the castle ruins, including a Sanada museum, samurai residences, and the Matsushiro Imperial Headquarters (underground bunker).

- Castle ruins: Earthworks, dry moats, water moats, and other topographical features remain that convey the structure of the past. You can take your time viewing the ruins from the walking paths.
- Sanada-related museums: Several facilities in the area exhibit historical documents, swords, and family heirlooms related to the Sanada family, and are a gateway to learning more about Matsushiro's history.
- Samurai residences and townhouses: The remains of feudal domain residences, restored buildings, and old street layouts remain, allowing you to experience the atmosphere of a castle town from the Edo period.
- Matsushiro Imperial Headquarters (Underground Bunker): This underground bunker was planned during World War II, and an extensive network of tunnels still remains. There are also guided tours available (see separate tour information).
- Seasonal scenery: The cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves are particularly beautiful, enhancing the scenery of strolls around the castle ruins and surrounding area.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest major hub: Nagano Station (JR, Hokuriku Shinkansen).
- Bus: From Nagano Station, take a Nagano City bus bound for Matsushiro (approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on the bus). Get off at the local "Matsushiro" bus stop and walk to the castle ruins.
- By car: Approximately 20 minutes from Nagano Station (varies depending on traffic conditions and departure point). Parking is available on-site (please check as there may be parking restrictions or fees).
- Taxi: It is convenient to take a taxi directly from Nagano Station (travel time may vary depending on road conditions).
- Getting around: The historical sites around the castle ruins are within walking distance, but it is more convenient to get around the sights throughout Matsushiro and its suburbs by bicycle or car.

- Zenkoji Temple (Nagano City Center) — A representative temple and shrine in Nagano City that is easily accessible from Matsushiro and can easily be incorporated into a sightseeing route.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The number of tourists increases during cherry blossom season, autumn foliage season, and long weekends. If you want to avoid crowded buses, parking lots, and museums, we recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the morning.
- Manners: In areas where samurai residences and private houses remain, there are privately owned lands and living spaces. Please follow the no-entry signs and notices, and observe proper etiquette when photographing and passing through.
- Footing: The castle ruins have dirt paths, steps, and slopes in some areas. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. After rain, areas can become muddy and slippery.
- Opening hours: The opening hours of the museum and the underground bunker tour may change depending on the season and day of the week. Please check opening hours, closing days, and admission fees in advance.
- Prepare for the cold and heat: In winter, be careful of the cold, snow, and frozen roads. In summer, don't forget to prepare for the sun and heat (drinking water, hats, etc.).
