Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Honnoji Temple is a temple located in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, and is particularly famous as the place where Oda Nobunaga committed suicide during the Honnoji Incident in the Sengoku period. This incident made the temple known nationwide, and it is a highly valued historical site. It has been burned down and rebuilt several times, and the current grounds are relatively small, but it is attractive for its historical significance and quiet atmosphere. Located in the city center, it is also easy to visit in conjunction with the surrounding shopping districts and tourist attractions.

Highlights

  • Main hall and grounds: The grounds are calm and peaceful as a temple associated with Nobunaga. The building itself has been restored, but it still has weight as a historical site.
  • Monuments and memorial towers related to the Honnoji Incident: There are stone monuments and memorial towers commemorating the details of the incident and those who perished (please refer to the information boards when visiting).
  • Small gardens and stonework: Enjoy a tranquil garden in the heart of Kyoto. Please check the signs posted at each location to see if photography is permitted.
  • Combining it with a stroll around the surrounding area: Teramachi Street, Nishiki Market, Pontocho, Gion, and more are all within walking distance, so you can enjoy a historical stroll and a gourmet meal at the same time.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station (walking distance)
    • Approximately 7-10 minutes on foot from Karasuma-Oike Station on the Karasuma Line and Tozai Line
    • Approximately 10-15 minutes on foot from Hankyu Railway Karasuma Station
  • From Kyoto Station: Take the Karasuma Subway Line to Karasuma-Oike Station (approx. 7 minutes), then walk from the station. It is also convenient to take a taxi (approx. 15 minutes depending on road conditions).
  • Bus: City buses also run through the neighborhood, but they may be delayed due to road conditions, so we recommend using the subway during busy times.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 20-30 minutes (just enough time to look around the main hall and historical sites)
  • Sightseeing in the surrounding area: 1-2 hours (if exploring Nishiki Market, Teramachi Street, etc.)

Nearby spots

  • Nishiki Market (about 5-10 minutes walk): A famous food spot known as Kyoto's kitchen. Perfect for sampling local delicacies and looking for souvenirs.
  • Teramachi-dori and Shinkyogoku (walking distance): Lots of shopping and restaurants, convenient for strolling.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Consideration for religious facilities: Please be quiet when worshiping, and follow the instructions of posted notices and staff regarding etiquette for incense and offerings. Please refrain from shouting or eating or drinking within the temple grounds.
  • Photography: There are some areas within the temple grounds and buildings where photography is prohibited. Please check the notices posted and follow the rules.
  • Busy periods: The number of visitors increases during the cherry blossom season in spring, Golden Week, the autumn foliage season, and around the anniversary of the Honnoji Incident (around June). Be aware of crowds and waiting times to enter the temple.
  • Footing and Clothing: Although most areas within the temple grounds are paved, they can become slippery on rainy days. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes.
