Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mount Kiso-Komagatake is a representative mountain in the Central Alps (Kiso Mountains), with an elevation of approximately 2,956m. It is known for its unique landscapes, including Senjojiki Cirque (a circular valley formed by a glacier) and Mount Hoken, its abundance of alpine plants, and the magnificent panoramic view from the summit (of the Southern Alps, Northern Alps, and Central Alps), and is visited by many climbers and tourists, from beginners to advanced climbers. It has long been an object of mountain worship, and there is even a small shrine (Komagatake Shrine) on the summit.

Highlights

  • Senjojiki Cirque: A viewing spot reached by ropeway. Wide snowy valleys and summer alpine plant communities (dicentra, anemone, buttercup, etc.) can be seen here.
  • Kiso Komagatake Peak: If the weather is good, you can enjoy a 360-degree view. You can see the Southern Alps, Northern Alps, and Mt. Fuji (depending on the conditions).
  • Mt. Hoken: A famous mountain with sharp rocky ridges that has a strong alpine atmosphere, where you can enjoy chain sections and small-scale rock climbing (for advanced climbers).
  • Alpine plants: The summer flowering season (mid-July to August) is a treasure trove of flowers. The contrast between the flowers and the snowy valleys is beautiful.
  • Mountain huts and sunrise: Staying overnight at the Komagatake Summit Lodge and other accommodations, as well as watching the sea of clouds and sunrise from Senjojiki in the early morning, are also popular.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Komagane Station on the JR Iida Line. Alternatively, you can take the Chuo Main Line to Ina City or Chino.
  • General directions:
    1. Take a bus from JR Komagane Station to Suganodai Bus Center (approximately 20-30 minutes).
    2. Take a local bus (or shuttle bus) from Suganodai Bus Center to Shirabidaira (approximately 25 minutes).
    3. From Shirabidaira, take the Central Alps Komagatake Ropeway to Senjojiki Station (approximately 7 minutes).
    4. It is a short walk from Senjojiki Station to the summit of Mt. Kisokoma (approximately 3-4 hours round trip, depending on stamina and weather).
  • By car: Access from Komagane IC or Ina IC on the Chuo Expressway. There is a paid parking lot at Suganodai (it may fill up during peak hours, so we recommend arriving early).
  • Note: Ropeway and bus operations vary depending on the season and weather. Services may be suspended especially in bad weather or strong winds, so please check official information from Komagatake Ropeway, Komagane City Tourism, etc. in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Senjojiki sightseeing (round trip ropeway + stroll): about 2-3 hours
  • Round trip from Senjojiki to Kiso Komagatake (day trip): Approximately 5-7 hours (including ropeway and round trip bus)
  • Relaxed plan (one night at a mountain hut + descend the mountain the next day): about 2 days
  • Note: The results may vary depending on your physical strength, pace, and weather. Please plan your climb well in advance and act with safety as your top priority.

Nearby spots

  • Komagane Plateau/Komagane Onsen: Enjoy the hot springs after hiking and local cuisine (the sauced pork cutlet bowl is famous).
  • Kozenji Temple: A historic temple with a beautiful natural monument, a giant wild pear tree, and a clear stream.
  • Promenades and observation spots around Komagatake Ropeway (Senjojiki): Perfect for photography.
  • Observation point of Mt. Hoken and Ina Valley: There are also many other hiking routes and observation points.
  • There are also plenty of tourist spots that can be reached by car, such as Komagane Farms (a farm and leisure facility) and art museums.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The ropeway, buses, and parking lots can be extremely crowded during the peak summer season, consecutive holidays (Golden Week, Obon), and the autumn foliage season. We recommend leaving early in the morning.
  • Weather and physical condition: Due to the large difference in altitude, the weather can change suddenly. Be sure to bring warm clothing, rain gear, a headlamp, food, and water. Be aware of symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, dizziness, nausea), and do not push yourself too hard.
  • Winter/snow season: During periods when there is still a lot of snow and ice, you will need equipment such as crampons and ice axes, as well as experience. Please check in advance as the ropeway may be closed.
  • Climbing equipment: hiking boots, layers, map, snacks, warm clothes, and a mobile phone (signal reception may be weak in some areas). It is recommended to submit a climbing notification.
  • Nature conservation and etiquette: Alpine plants are very delicate. Do not trample on them, do not pick flowers, and take your trash home with you. Do not stray from the hiking trails.
  • Check safety information: Be sure to check ropeway and bus schedules, weather forecasts, and mountain rescue information before setting off. Make reservations in advance for mountain huts.

(Additional Information) For official operation information and the latest mountain climbing information, please check the official website of the Komagatake Ropeway or the Komagane City Tourism Association. Please be mindful of safety and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the four seasons.
