Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Mount Usu is an active volcano located in Sobetsu Town, Usu District, Hokkaido, and is part of Shikotsu-Toya National Park, which includes Lake Toya. The mountain is located on the rim of a caldera, and is notable for having erupted repeatedly throughout the Showa and Heisei periods. In particular, the formation of Showa-Shinzan from 1943 to 1945 (Showa-Shinzan is a lava dome created by the eruption of Mount Usu), as well as the eruptions in 1977 and 2000, had a major impact on the local topography and people's lives.
As a result, the landscape of the majestic crater, lava cones, hot spring town, lake and volcano has become a tourist attraction, and the area is highly regarded geologically as a geopark (Lake Toya-Usuzan Geopark).A major attraction is the close-up view of the crater and Showa-Shinzan from the ropeway and observation deck.
Highlights
- Usuzan Ropeway: A short climb from the base of the mountain to near the summit. From the observation deck near the ropeway's mountaintop station, you can enjoy a spectacular view of Mount Showa-Shinzan, Lake Toya, and the crater cluster.
- Showa Shinzan: A lava dome formed in a short period of time during the 1943 eruption. It has been preserved and can be seen up close from the observation trails and observation points.
- Usu Volcano Memorial Museum (or Geopark Facility): This is a great place to start your visit as it houses exhibits that teach you about the history of eruptions, the workings of volcanoes, past damage and the recovery process.
- View of the crater and crater floor: There are several crater remains scattered around the summit, and there is a trail to observe the traces of volcanic activity (there are some restricted areas).
- View of Lake Toya: The view of Lake Toya from Mount Usu is particularly beautiful, and its appearance changes depending on the season and weather. It is especially spectacular when combined with the autumn leaves.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR Toya Station (accessible by bus or taxi from Toya Station). Toya Station is on the JR Muroran Main Line.
- Bus: There are local buses that run from Toya Station and the Toya Onsen area to the Usuzan Ropeway (please note that buses operate seasonally and are limited in number, so it is recommended to check in advance).
- By car: It takes about 2 hours by car from Sapporo (via the Hokkaido Expressway, using the Toyako IC), and about 1.5 to 2 hours from New Chitose Airport. Parking is available near Ropeway Sanroku Station.
- Expressway bus: There is an express bus from Sapporo/New Chitose Airport to Toya Onsen, and from there you can take a bus or taxi to Mount Usu.
- Note: Public transportation service frequency varies depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the operation status (bus and ropeway operation) before setting off.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short-term sightseeing: Ropeway round trip + mountain observation deck (30 minutes to 1 hour)
- Careful observation: Visit to the Volcano Memorial Museum + Ropeway + Walk around the area (2-3 hours)
- Sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day if you plan to visit Lake Toya, Showa Shinzan, and hot springs (we also recommend staying overnight to enjoy the scenery the next morning).
Nearby spots
- Lake Toya (Toyako Onsen): Enjoy sightseeing boats, strolls along the lake, and accommodation in the hot spring town. Summer fireworks displays are also popular.
- Showa Shinzan: A lava dome created by the eruption of Mount Usu. Tourist trails and observation decks are available.
- Usu Volcano Memorial Museum (Geopark Center): Exhibits where you can learn about volcanoes and topography.
- Distant view of Mt. Tarumae and Mt. Yotei: If the weather is good, you can see the famous peaks in the surrounding area.
- Local hot springs and cuisine: Hot spring inns around Lake Toya and cuisine made with seafood and agricultural products.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Check volcano information: Mount Usu is an active volcano. Please check the local volcano information and alert level in advance with the Japan Meteorological Agency and Hokkaido's disaster prevention information. If the eruption alert level is raised, entry may be prohibited and the ropeway may be suspended.
- Obey entry restrictions and signs: There are restricted areas around the crater. Please follow signs, ropes, and instructions from staff.
- Health management: Volcanic gases (sulfur smell) and strong winds may make you ill, so please be careful if you have any respiratory illnesses.
- Weather changes: The wind can be strong and the temperature can drop near the summit, so please bring a jacket and warm clothing. In winter, you will need to take precautions against snow and ice.
- Crowds: The ropeway, observation deck, and parking lot will be crowded during peak tourist season (summer vacation, consecutive holidays, autumn foliage season). We recommend arriving early or visiting on a weekday.
- Photography/Drones: Drone flying may require regulations and permission. Please do not fly drones without permission.
- Nature conservation and etiquette: Please observe the following rules when visiting: do not damage vegetation or the terrain, be sure to take your trash with you, and strictly prohibit open flames.
