Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Showa Shinzan is a lava dome-shaped volcanic formation located in Sobetsu Town, near Lake Toya, on the southern foot of Mount Usu in Hokkaido. It was formed in 1943 (Showa 18) when the ground surface rose due to seismic activity, and continued eruptive activity from the following year onwards, resulting in the mountain's current shape. As a "living mountain" whose birth is recorded, it is extremely rare from both an academic and tourist perspective, and a major feature is that records of the topographical changes and eruptions from that time are preserved and exhibited.

Its attractions include the relatively young volcanic topography that can be seen up close, the dynamic sensation of feeling the steam and temperature, and the sense of unity with the surrounding scenery of Lake Toya and Mount Usu. Equipped with an observation deck, walking trails, and related facilities (museum and shop), it can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, from families to photography enthusiasts and those interested in volcanoes.

Highlights

  • Showashinzan Observatory: A classic spot where you can get a close-up view of the mountain. You can clearly see the shape and color of the volcano and the contrast with the surrounding forest. The scenery changes depending on the light in the morning and evening.
  • Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch (Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch): A nearby bear exhibition facility (open seasonally, fee applies). Popular with families with children. *Please check opening hours.
  • Exhibitions and Museums: A facility where you can see records of volcanic eruptions from the Showa period, photographs, and actual specimens. You can learn about the history of landform formation and the effects of earthquakes and eruptions.
  • Promenades and walking paths: The walking paths in the surrounding area offer views of Showa Shinzan, Lake Toya, and Mt. Yotei (depending on the weather) from different angles.
  • Surrounding volcanic landscape: Combine this with the Usuzan Ropeway and the view of Lake Toya to enjoy the volcanic activity and the lake scenery.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Safety and Manners:Do not enter restricted areas or areas enclosed by ropes. It is dangerous to go to areas with unstable ground or near fumaroles. If you smell volcanic gas or feel the heat, do not force yourself.
  • Weather and Season: In winter, roads and viewing areas may be restricted due to snow and ice. On windy or bad weather days, visibility may be poor and you may not be able to enjoy the scenery, so please check the weather information and facility operation status in advance.
  • Volcano information: Information regarding volcanic activity may be announced for Mt. Usu and Mt. Showa-Shinzan. Be sure to follow any volcanic warnings, advisories, or mountain climbing restrictions that may be in place. Be sure to check official information from the meteorological observatory or the town before sightseeing.
  • Environmental Considerations and Local MannersPlease observe basic etiquette, such as taking your trash home with you, not touching plants or animals, and following local instructions.
  • Check facility information: Opening hours, closing days, admission fees, parking fees, etc. may vary depending on the season and facility. Please check the official website or tourist information center for the latest information before visiting.
