Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shikanoshima is a small island in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City, located on the north side of Hakata Bay. It has flourished as a key point for maritime traffic since ancient times, and is particularly famous as the place where the "King of Na" Golden Seal (commonly known as the "King of Na" Golden Seal) was discovered (the Golden Seal is currently on display at the Fukuoka City Museum). It is also home to Shikaumi Shrine, which enshrines the guardian deity of the sea, and continues to cherish the ocean faith and festivals that have continued since ancient times.

The natural scenery is attractive, with calm sandy beaches, tide pools, and views of Fukuoka city and the Genkai Sea across the sea. In addition to enjoying outdoor activities such as cycling, walking, swimming, and fishing, there are also restaurants dotted around the area where you can savor seasonal seafood. Easily accessible from the city center, this is a spot where you can enjoy history and the sea on a day trip.

Highlights

  • Shigaumi Shrine: An ancient shrine where prayers are made for the safety of the sea and the protection of voyages. It is characterized by the historic shrine building, the atmosphere of the grounds, and its location close to the sea. Please observe proper etiquette and be quiet when visiting.
  • Kinin Park (near the discovery site): A park commemorating the spot where the Golden Seal was discovered. There is an information board explaining the origins and history of the discovery. To see the real thing, head to the Fukuoka City Museum.
  • Coast and sandy beach (Shikanoshima beach): You can enjoy swimming in the sea in summer, and tidal pools and strolls from spring to autumn. The sunsets and sunrises are also beautiful.
  • Viewpoint: You can get a panoramic view of Hakata Bay and the opposite shore from the island's hills and coastal roads. It's perfect for a stroll while feeling the sea breeze.
  • Cycling and walking courses: The road around the island is lightly traveled by car, so it's popular to cycle along the coast. Renting a bicycle is convenient.
  • Local seafood restaurants: There are many restaurants serving dishes made with seafood caught around Shikanoshima. You can enjoy seasonal sashimi and set meals.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
