Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Zamami Island (Zamami Village) is one of the central islands of the Kerama Islands, located west of Okinawa's main island, and is known for its crystal clear "Kerama Blue" waters and abundant coral reefs. In the past, the island prospered as part of the Ryukyu Kingdom through fishing and trade, but the entire Kerama Islands became a war site during World War II. Today, diving, snorkeling, and whale watching (in winter) are popular, and the island's appeal lies in its untouched nature and laid-back island life. The settlements are small, consisting mainly of guesthouses and pensions, where you can enjoy cuisine made with local ingredients and the warmth of the island's people.
Highlights
- Furuzamami Beach (Furuzamami) and Ama Beach: The water is highly transparent and perfect for snorkeling. There are many shallow beaches that are family-friendly.
- Diving SpotsThere are many spots where you can encounter coral reefs, tropical fish, and if you're lucky, sea turtles and manta rays. There are several diving shops on the island, and they offer everything from fun dives to trial dives.
- Whale watching (winter)Humpback whales appear from January to March. Observation tours are available, giving you the chance to see the whales breaching and spouting up close.
- Observation deck and trekkingThe ocean views of the Kerama Islands seen from the island's high ground and promenades are spectacular. There are many view spots that can be reached in a short time.
- War Sites and Memorials: There are historical sites and memorial sites related to the Battle of Okinawa scattered around, where you can learn about the island's history.
- Stargazing: The island has little light pollution, so the starry sky on a clear day is spectacular. You can even see the Milky Way on a night walk.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
Zamami Island is primarily accessed by sea.
- Nearest train station: The only rail service on Okinawa's main island is the Yui Rail, so the nearest stations are "Yui Rail Naha Airport Station" or "Kencho-mae Station." You can travel from Naha Airport to the port (Tomari Pier/Tomarin) by monorail, taxi, or local bus.
- Naha (Tomari Wharf) → Zamami Port: From Tomari Pier in Naha City, you can take a ferry or high-speed boat to Zamami Port. The high-speed boat takes about 40 to 60 minutes, while the ferry (large ship) takes around 2 hours (this may vary depending on the boat and weather conditions).
- Transfer from the accommodationWhile some villages and beaches are within walking distance from Zamami Port, it is more common to use the hotel shuttle service, rent a bicycle or motorbike, or take the local bus (which runs infrequently). Shuttle services from diving shops and tour companies are also convenient.
- remarks: The number of ferry and high-speed boat services may vary or be suspended depending on the season, so be sure to check the timetable and operation status before departing, and we recommend making reservations in advance during peak periods.

- Busy period: During Golden Week, summer vacation (July to August), Obon, and winter whale season (January to March), the area is expected to be crowded and accommodations will be fully booked. Please make reservations early, especially for diving and accommodation.
- Environmental protection and etiquette: Please follow the rules, such as not touching the corals or marine life, taking any trash with you, and not getting too close to wild animals such as dolphins and sea turtles. Stepping on the corals will damage them.
- Cash and shopping: ATMs and stores that accept credit cards are often limited on the island, so it's a good idea to bring cash with you.
- Measures against sunburn and heatstroke:The UV rays are strong and there are many hot days, so wear a hat, UV protection, and drink plenty of water. When going into the ocean, it is a good idea to protect your skin with a rash guard.
- Medical/Emergency:Please bring your regular medications and a simple first aid kit. Medical institutions are limited, so if you have a chronic illness, please check in advance.
- means of transportation: There are few vehicles for transportation on the island, and rental cars are generally not available (mostly rental motorbikes and bicycles). Nighttime transportation is also limited.
