Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Okazaki Castle is a castle located in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, which flourished as the central castle of Mikawa from the Sengoku period through the Edo period. It is particularly known as the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and is a popular spot for history buffs as many historical sites and documents related to Ieyasu remain. The current castle tower was reconstructed during the Showa period, and the interior is now a museum displaying local documents and information on battles and castles. The area around the castle ruins has been developed as Okazaki Park, and its moats, stone walls, wide lawns, and rows of cherry blossom trees create beautiful scenery throughout the seasons.

Highlights

  • Castle tower (reconstructed castle tower): Inside the castle tower there is an exhibition room and observation floor, where you can see armor and letters related to Tokugawa Ieyasu, as well as panels and actual materials that clearly explain the history of the castle. From the observation deck you can enjoy a view of Okazaki city.
  • Historical sites related to the birthplace of Ieyasu: Around the castle there are historical sites, statues and information boards related to Ieyasu, where you can learn about the background to the establishment of the Edo Shogunate.
  • Okazaki Park and its moat and stone walls: In spring, it is a popular cherry blossom viewing spot and bustles with visitors. Just strolling around the moat is very picturesque.
  • Seasonal Events: There are many events held throughout the year, such as the Cherry Blossom Festival during cherry blossom season, fireworks displays in the summer, and historical festivals (events vary from year to year, so it is recommended to check in advance).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • By JR: About 15-20 minutes on foot from Okazaki Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line, or a few minutes by city or local bus from the station.
  • By Meitetsu: It is about a 10-15 minute walk from Higashi-Okazaki Station on the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line, or you can easily access it by bus or taxi.
  • By car: Approximately 20-30 minutes by car from the Okazaki IC on the Tomei Expressway. There are paid parking lots around the park, but they tend to fill up during events, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • Other: City loop buses and sightseeing tour buses may be operating. Please check the Okazaki City official website or tourist information for the latest schedules and routes.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour (inside the castle tower only): Approximately 30 to 60 minutes
  • Walking around the park and visiting the castle tower: 1-2 hours
  • If you want to enjoy it at a leisurely pace during cherry blossom season or an event: 2-3 hours (including food, drink, stalls, and walking around the area)

Nearby spots

  • Okazaki Park Area: A large park area including the castle ruins. Perfect for strolling and picnics.
  • Hatcho Miso-related facilities: Okazaki is the birthplace of Hatcho Miso. There are restaurants where you can tour miso breweries and enjoy local cuisine made with miso.
  • Otogawa Riverfront: There are walking paths and cafes along the river, and it is recommended to take a stroll along the river to visit the castle.
  • Okazaki City's local museums and art galleries: There are facilities scattered throughout the city where you can learn about the history and culture of the region (please check the official website for opening times).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Busy times: The area is extremely crowded during cherry blossom season (usually late March to early April), Golden Week, summer fireworks festivals, and historical festivals. We recommend using public transportation and arriving early.
  • Manners: Please be considerate of other park visitors by taking your trash with you, refraining from drinking alcohol outside of designated areas, and refraining from loud noises. Damaging historical sites is prohibited.
  • Check exhibits and facilities: Exhibits and opening hours may change due to special exhibitions, renovations, etc. Please check the official Okazaki Castle information in advance to confirm admission fees, opening hours, and closing days.
  • Barrier-free access and movement precautions: Due to the nature of the castle, there are stone steps and slopes in some areas. Please be mindful of your step, and wheelchair users may have restrictions at some facilities, so it is best to inquire in advance.
  • Seasonal precautions: Take precautions against the heat in summer and cold in winter. It's also a good idea to take precautions against pollen and insects in spring.

*Please check the official websites of Okazaki City and Okazaki Castle, as well as tourist information, in advance for the latest information (opening hours, admission fees, events, etc.).
