Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Ojira River Valley is a natural spot in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture (Hakushu region) known for its clear streams and valley scenery. Its source is the abundant meltwater from the Southern Alps (Akaishi to Takamine region), and its crystal-clear emerald-green waters, eroded pools and waterfalls, and beautiful scenery created by the rock faces, are its attractions. Historically, the valley was used for local water supplies and for waterwheels, but today it is a popular tourist destination where you can enjoy strolling, splashing around in the clear stream, taking photos, and seasonal scenery (fresh greenery, clear water, autumn leaves).

Highlights

  • The color of the clear stream: As the source of the stream is underground water from the Southern Alps, the water is characterized by its high transparency and clear color. There are many photogenic spots scattered around the area.
  • Valley walking trails: You can observe the beauty of the valley up close from well-maintained walking trails and suspension bridges, and there are courses that are relatively easy even for beginners to walk.
  • Pools (potholes) and small waterfalls: There are pools of various sizes and waterfalls with steps, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the water's shapes. The quiet pools are also popular as a water play spot in the summer.
  • Seasonal scenery: The fresh greenery of the season, the clear streams of summer, and the autumn leaves are particularly spectacular. In winter, the snowy scenery creates a different atmosphere (please be aware of traffic restrictions).
  • Combine your sightseeing with the surrounding attractions: Nearby attractions include Ojiro Forest Famous Water Park Berga and Suntory Hakushu Distillery, so visiting them all will make for a fulfilling day.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Location: Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture (Hakushu Town area)

  • Public transportation: The nearest public transportation is limited and infrequent, so please check the timetable in advance. During the tourist season, local buses and tourist buses may operate, but it is more convenient to use a taxi.
  • Car: The most convenient way to access the area is by car. Take the Chuo Expressway (Nagasaka IC or Kobuchizawa direction) and take the national and prefectural roads to the area. Parking lots are often available on-site (free or paid parking varies depending on the time of year and the facility), but they can fill up during busy times, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Navigation/Map: It is easy to find your way by setting "Ojiro River Valley" or "Ojiro Forest Famous Water Park Beruga" as your destination on your smartphone or car navigation system. Mobile phone signals can be weak in some mountainous areas, so we recommend downloading a map or carrying a paper map.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short walk: A round trip from the entrance to the main attractions takes about 1-2 hours.
  • If you want to take your time and enjoy taking photos and playing in the water, half a day (2-4 hours) is recommended.
  • If combining with nearby attractions (bell ga, distillery tour, nearby trekking, etc.): 1 day or more (full-day sightseeing)

Nearby spots

  • Ojiro Forest Meisui Park Beruga: With park, camping, hot spring facilities and a playground, it is popular with families.
  • Suntory Hakushu Distillery: A popular spot for whiskey distillery tours (advance reservations may be required) and shop visits.
  • Kiyosato Plateau/Kobuchizawa Area: The tourist attractions and shopping spots of Kiyosato and Kobuchizawa are within a 30-60 minute drive, so you can combine your visits.
  • Southern Alps trailhead area: This area is also used as a base for routes to serious mountain climbing and alpine plant observation.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The park can get crowded during summer vacation, tourist season, and autumn foliage season, so consider leaving early in the morning or visiting on a weekday. The parking lot may fill up.
  • Safety precautions: The rocks in the valley are slippery and dangerously covered in moss. It is important to stay on only the tourist trails, wear non-slip shoes, and keep an eye on children.
  • Flooding and weather: Localized heavy rain can cause sudden flooding in mountainous areas. Water flows quickly during or immediately after rainfall, so please avoid playing near water or wading. Please check weather and river information in advance.
  • Garbage and Nature Conservation: Please be sure to take your trash with you and refrain from using fires, camping, or collecting plants outside of designated areas. Please strictly observe the rules to protect the local environment.
  • Check facility information: Parking, toilets, and traffic regulations may change depending on the season and year. Please check the latest information on the official websites of Hokuto City and local facilities before visiting.
  • Pets: There are some places where you can bring your dog, but please be sure to keep it on a leash and clean up after itself.

Note: Specific bus schedules, parking availability and fees, and how to reserve a distillery tour may vary depending on the season. Please be sure to check the latest information on the official website, tourist associations, and transportation agencies before visiting.
