Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Osarizawa Mine is a historic mine site in Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture, and was once one of Japan's leading mines, producing precious and non-ferrous metals (copper, silver, gold, lead, zinc, etc.). After a long history of mining, it is now open to the public as a tourist tunnel and museum, and is a popular tourist facility where you can see the actual tunnels. Its attractions include exhibits that convey the process of modernization and the work and lives of miners, as well as the opportunity to learn about mining technology and history, making it a recommended destination not only for mining enthusiasts but also for those who want to enjoy historical and industrial tourism.

Highlights

  • Tourist mine tour: You can experience the inside of a mine by walking through an actual mine tunnel or using a trolley or passageway (guide-guided tours are the norm). The mine is cool throughout the year, and you can see the geological layers and mining remains up close.
  • Museum and exhibits: Learn about mining techniques and the industrial history of the region through exhibits of historical materials from the mine, mining machinery, miners' tools, old photographs, and more.
  • Landscape as a geosite: You can see the unique landscape of a mine, such as outcrops and remains of ore dressing plants, as well as large-scale remains.
  • Experience and learning programs (if available): Guided talks, model tours, learning programs for schools, etc. Some programs may require advance reservations.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest JR station: Kazunohanawa Station on the JR Hanawa Line is one of the nearest stations (it is a bit far from the station, so it is more convenient to take a bus or taxi).
  • Bus: Local buses may operate, but they are often infrequent so please check the timetable in advance.
  • By car: Access by car is generally via the Akita Expressway or national highways. Many facilities have parking lots, making it convenient to visit by rental car.
  • Taxi: Public transportation is limited, so taking a taxi from the station is the safest option.

*Please check the official website or Kazuno City tourist information before visiting for the latest information on transportation access, timetables, and parking.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Tour of the mine only: Approximately 30-60 minutes (depending on the length of the guided tour)
  • Museum and mine tour: Approximately 60-90 minutes
  • If you want to take your time to look around, take photos, and walk around the area, it will take about 2 hours.
